Star Wars: The Old Republic teases the ominous story of GU 6.2 Echoes of Oblivion

“You do not know the face of true power. But you will, very soon. You will.”

With these chilling words, Star Wars: The Old Republic teased its fans with the new storyline coming in the Echoes of Oblivion update. BioWare tweeted info drops about the patch from Friday’s cantina livestream while also posting a one-minute story prologue for the patch.

“Game Update 6.2 marks the potential return of the galaxy’s greatest evil,” BioWare said. “Jedi Kira Carsen and Sith Lord Scourge finally found the ship carrying Satele and her students. Join them and other allies in uncovering the mystery behind the disappearance of this ship.”

In addition to the voice-acted storyline, Update 6.2 will add the Spirit of Vengeance flashpoint, login rewards, and an emote window.

And as a friendly PSA, you can use the code “Livestreamcantina2020” “CantinaLivestream2020” on your SWTOR account to unlock some free mounts — but only if you use it by next Friday.

Update
BioWare has replaced the codes – it’s an older code, sir, but it checks out! “CantinaLivestream2020” should work now. Thanks, Hannah!

If people have issue with this… I get it, but really, its pretty clear to me as even a nearly non-player that 2017 up til even now, has been a slower motion course correction for the game that has to at least include something of the story beats intended for a 2017 that used the KOTFE/KOTET format that they pivoted away from, but had at least a third year expansion intended. Some of that correction would have to include the hints that though the Emperor was excised from the protag/Outlander, not everything about him was yet finished. If anything, I’m just annoyed its taking til 2020 and not 2018-19.

Don’t expect a whole big focus on him and his shenanigans. Perhaps his energies exist onward, or there’s a series of updates that handles the gist that a third ‘KOT’ expansion would have focused on, but then its all over and it’ll be amongst other things instead of the more deliberate Chapters system. It’ll be more about what new state the galaxy might be in a 2020s SWTOR, than simple rehash of Valkorian doing some scheme. Yeah a scheme will be there, but as instrument for the future story. A lot of stuff is ‘returning’, but again all as instruments for future story. Malgus isn’t the same. The faction war isn’t the same. Returning companions often definitely aren’t the same. Because they’re all being prepped for the later, likely new, and possibly final confrontations, and I don’t think that’s just ‘Emperor raid boss’ (at least, alone).

Hm. I’m a frequent player. This is one of my main MMOs. And this is the guy we potentially defeated for the first time nine years ago. I’ve since removed him from my character’s mind twice, prevented his rebirth, watched him die again, dealt with his kids for two long storylines, and then allegedly defeated him for real this time. Almost every major content update (minus RotHC and Onslaught) has significantly involved him.

We knew he was going to be in this because of the Force plague. That was not a surprise to me.

What was a surprise is that they chose to present the trailer as just another ominous Vitiate/Valkorian/Tenebrae speech that could have been from basically any point since Ziost and doesn’t indicate the story has advanced at all in the better part of a decade.

If his story arc isn’t finished yet, it’s because the writers kept choosing to go “And then…!” “You’ll never guess what he did next!” rather than eventually wrapping it up.

Look, I enjoy this game. I sub. I’ll play this, and I’m sure it’ll be fun. But it just gets a little wearying when it seems the writers aren’t willing to ever let the plot move forward definitively in this area, delays aside.

What you all described there, I think is really valid, and is kind of what I meant by “I get it”!

I think a lot of these issues would be at least alleviated if this was a MMO that moved the story at a clip of say… at least FFXIV? Instead its like 1, maybe 2 ‘good’ story parts a year now that players have to hope is enjoyable enough.

By the way, has anyone gotten the code to work? It wouldn’t let me enter it. I checked their socials for more information but all I saw were others with the same issue, no solutions.

It didnt work for me either….. so your not alone.

Yep. Doesn’t work for me either.

My guess is they retired it early or they had too many submissions and the system lags. For me it had worked but I redeemed on livestream-day. The catch was you didnt get a confirmation yet it redeemed and when I went in game my characters had received 2 mails with 1 mount each(cause I already owned 2 of the 4)

Reader
treehuggerhannah

It definitely didn’t work for me. I’ve played since I attempted the code redemption, and I haven’t gotten anything in the mail.

On the official forums, people suggested that because the livestream was delayed, the code was probably set to expire too early. This will likely be fixed once they’re back in the office today.

Reader
PanagiotisLial1

Yes they said, during the livestream it would expire next friday, but its possible they screwed it up and expired the next day. I used it right after the livestream, like 10-15 mins after it

Bioware confirmed on their official forums that they’re aware of the issue and are working on it. :)

They also had de Paul interviewed in the stream who does not only Valkorion voice but also General Daerun and its amazing to see how he can do so many different voices but also the passion for what he does. Easily one of the most loved voice actors within the SWTOR community

I can’t wait!

By the way, for those complaining about having to deal with the emperor yet again, this is from a GM on the official site:

“The culmination of the Emperor storyline and the beginning of something new…”

So, before you jump on the negative bandwagon I would check the forums first. This was the whole point Kira and Scourge showed back up. They had to explain where two characters so closely tied to the emperor had been all this time. It was because of this.

I know it has been a long long time since the end of Knights of the Eternal Throne, and very little story or content but I was certain at the end of that they said, that was the end of Valkorian/Sith Emperor. His dead for good and his not coming back ever.

Time to move on.

So why is he back? Why is the trailer suggesting that killing him 3 times is not enough, thwarting his rebirth on Yavin 4 was not enough, even being told that was the end was not enough.

Is the 10 year mark going to come by and we will still be rehashing the same guy the Jedi Knight defeated at Launch? Is there nothing else to TOR than this one story?

Because that’s Star Wars. “The Emperor” always comes back eventually, usually in a different form but it’s still the same entity whether it’s Tenebrae, Valkorian, Vitiate, or Palpatine. So if we’re going to ask that question, we have to ask it to Star Wars as an IP as a whole, and not SW:TOR, which is really just following the established narrative in a different time period. This update will likely put an end to the Valkorian portion of that, and we’ve known since the end of KotET that the story wasn’t 100% concluded, so this is something people have been wanting for a very long time.

I’m super excited for new SWTOR story content!

That said, I wish we could move past almost every single plot tying back to the Emperor in some way. There’s a huge galaxy out there and at this point I’m ready to move on from Vitiate/Valkorian/Tenebrae/whatever name he’s going by today.

Reader
Malcolm Swoboda

I wonder if this time its more about the true end of the/this Emperor tying towards a new plot point.

Reader
PanagiotisLial1

I guess so, since they said in the livestream at some point “this time we are killing him for good” but due to the nature of Star Wars there will always be a new emperor

Reader
Malcolm Swoboda

I’m sure the dark powers will stick around for any potential usage in this game, other games, any other media, but I think this is really the end of This Emperor – or at least the start of a series of updates that definitely ends him.

Reader
treehuggerhannah

For me it’s less about wanting him to be dead as just not wanting every story to be about him. If we can’t permanently kill him and (since we’re the protagonist) he can’t permanently kill us, just endlessly fighting to a stalemate is getting old.

The writers have a whole galaxy to work with. Not every plot has to be a Vitiate/Valkorian/Tenebrae plot. The writers are fully able to just… write about something else.

Hopefully that’s what will happen here, and they’ll start to transition to tell more varied stories.

For years I’ve wanted an expansion with a ‘Heroic Class’ (that is, WoW style starting at high level and skipping story) Droid/Synthetic with an expansion story onward that can cater to being droid or organic. You can Pandaria it up by choosing faction, I guess.
