The Daily Grind: What’s your favorite ‘oh shit’ button in an MMO?

Last summer, I put up a Daily Grind on how people feel about “oh shit” buttons in MMOs – you know, those long-cooldown panic powers that take up tray and screen real estate. Generally speaking, I don’t like them. I don’t remember to use them in most MMOs that offer them.

But of course, MMORPGs just keep giving them to us anyway, so if we have them, we may as well try. And I do have a few that are a heckuva lot of fun to deploy.

For example: In City of Heroes, I am actually a big fan of taking AoE sleeps and disorients, even though they’re not super popular compared to hard controls. I always use them in “oh shit” moments to try to get a situation paused until my more secure powers are ready to use again. And who’s gonna turn down a well-timed Accelerate Metabolism or Fulcrum Shift to turn the tide of a battle going south?

What’s your favorite “oh shit” button in an MMO?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Pally tanking with Lay On Hands. So many heroic moments.

also: the Eagle rez on Loremaster in LotRO. Also provided some moments.

Micro Jump Drive, EVE Online: Flings equipped ship 100 km in its direction of travel. Can be countered by Warp Scrambles, takes time to spool up. Best used prior to “oh shit” moments, thus preventing them. Conversely useful for instantly closing range on targets.

Vanish on stealth characters (Preferably with a trait that removes DoT’s that would knock you out of it when you use it.). I usually know precisely the moment I am about to die, and always am ready to hit those and run/get away.

The Secret World’s wings! Great visual and very effective in output.

I’m also partial to WoW druid’s tranquility, largely because the sound effect is just so recognizable.

There was a TTRPG called Phoenix Dawn Command where characters got more and more powerful each time they died….right up until they died the final time. I always thought it would be interested to have some mechanic like that in an MMO where you can sacrifice your character for a limited duration of extreme power. But I admit it would be an absolute nightmare for balance, griefing, support, etc. It would be a phenomenal way to retire old characters though…

LotRO’s captain had some great ones.

Last Stand – can’t die for 10s, fun in PvE but hilarious in PvP! Can save soo many friends by charging the creeps then hitting last stand, everyone just beats on you hoping for the killing blow whilst all ur friends disappear. Combine that with….

In Harms Way – originally redirected 100% of the groups damage to you, so combined with last stand it was the ultimate “my group’s not gonna die” combo. Saved so many wipes with this combo, even if you do come out of it at the other end with 1hp and then die yourself. Defs worth it!

Shield of the Dunedain – not particularly flashy, but a lovely damage bubble you can put on a group member (not urself sadly). Again, great for saving tanks, or healers who’ve grabbed aggro, or dumb DPS standing in the fire. Combined with captain’s limited healing, you could often keep someone alive for that extra 10s whilst the group got the situation back under control.

LotRO in general had a great array of “oh shit” skills, it really added a lot of depth to the game as choosing the right skill at the right time could mean the difference between success or failure. It was never just a simple reaction – “im dying therefore use this one skill” – but a genuine choice between multiple meaningful skills. Never seen better.

Original LOTRO Captain was my favourite class of any MMO, until they ruined it with the class revamp :(

Accelerate Metabolism

Pfft. You’re supposed to use enhancements, hasten, and the alpha incarnate slot to make that sucker permanent.

The Captain’s Last Stand in LOTRO. It’s the ultimate “no-sell”, just 17 seconds of “Fuck you, I’m not dying.”

Used to be Bestial Wrath macro on by BM hunter. Pressed it in PvP when got cc’ed (old BW got you out of any cc), jumped on or wanted to kill fast. Had trinkets and dmg boost abilities attached to it as well.
