Old-school hardcore MMORPG Reign of Darkness issues $100K Kickstarter, free demo

Remember Reign of Darkness? We covered its early access arrival back in 2019; it’s a medieval grimdark MMORPG being developed by one person that styles itself as a game that “hearkens back to when players had to play a game to figure things out with a short learning curve,” where players engage in old-school tab-target combat, dungeon running, and theory crafting.

We bring this game back up because it has recently entered Kickstarter. Studio Unorthodox Games is asking for $100K in order to “[accelerate] the development and support of the game” including hiring more team members to the game’s development.

For those curious to see how things are shaping up, Reign has a free weekend running right now, letting folks kick the alpha version’s tires through Tuesday, December 1st, until 1:00 p.m. EST. This demo, incidentally, includes the latest patch that brings fixes, new bosses, and new weapons and armors among other things.

Another mmorpg hit Kickstarter, another SCAM is ready to collect money of fools. Thanks, but no thanks.

How else would a game get funded? Are you going to fund it personally? Some MMOs have done a Kickstarter and then bailed, but this one you can play any time you want.

Maybe you should stop parroting other people’s words and think for yourself.

Much prefer “old school tab target combat” to the new action hybrid models, so I’ll take a look.

It does seem interesting, but sure they dont need 100k just for it. More likely they want exposure to more people. That said I like it as project but wondering how it will turn out

It looks like it uses Unity and Atavism for the backend / mmo side of it. If so, I imagine the 100k is more for server hosting and the atavism licenses for handling more connections. Also to buy some asset store assets and such. Seems fairly reasionable setup for one person.

The game does use Unity but everything is custom coded and UI is all hand-made.
The Kickstarter is purely meant to bring members to the team and accelerate development. Highly recommend looking at the game or even the Kickstarter. Atavism looks nothing like what is in the game. The team has grown but not as much as hoped for.

Well he certainly is asking for a reasonable amount of money isn’t he…

Mmm hmm…Here we go again.

The difference here is there is a playable game, check the game out itself. Join the discord, patches are being made all the time. New content is coming in by the loads. The development team is very transparent about the development. etc.

If this is what someone is looking for in a game, then I hope it works out for them. I am not the target audience.

These guys are efficient. Clicked on the store link to find it was not only already in my library but installed and updated with a level four character. I have no clue when I actually played this thing.
