MMO Week in Review: Unbreaking Daybreak

8

If Daybreak’s been a bit of a punching bag in the MMO genre over the last five years, it’s only because of its long line of failures and shenanigans, from dumping EverQuest Next to fibbing about who owned it (and fibbing about not owning SSG!). But now, thanks to Swedish company EG7 buying up the entirety of Daybreak, the once-beloved MMORPG studio might finally be turning a corner, thanks to the extreme transparency we just got this in the form of EG7’s investor report, which as we covered at length includes revenues and playerbase sizes for all of the games. It sure would be nice to see Daybreak become the kind of company that wins best studio four years in a row once again.

Meanwhile, we also finished off our series of impressions for World of Warcraft Shadowlands.

Setting all the Daybreak C-suite critters “free” without severance or golden parachutes would be a nice, fresh, new start for EG7…

Sadly it doesn’t work that way. The company I worked with was bought by PayPal. They shut it down, the executive were all protected, got all their stock and the rest of us got nothing.

It will be written into the contracts otherwise the executives would never agree to it. They may get terminated afterwards, but it won’t be material at that point.

It’ll be a long, slow journey, but even if Daybreak can return to being a fraction of what they used to accomplish as SOE, it’ll be a great move in the right direction. I really hope we’ll get a new, proper MMO from them, especially if it carries the EQ name.

Speaking of Shadowlands, there’s a very accurate video which shows the questing experience in it in comparison to previous expansions:
