Star Trek Online delays its next patch to avoid mandatory respecs

Stay specced.

Considering that respecs in Star Trek Online can cost you actual money, you wouldn’t think that anyone would be upset at getting them for free… but when they’re mandatory respecs coming time and again, you can perhaps understand why player reaction might be an exhausted sigh. Players weren’t very happy about the idea that this week’s update to the game would require another respec, and the designers even announced that fact with a resigned apology.

Fortunately for players who have no desire to re-allocate skill points once again, the patch has been delayed in the hopes that the issue can be sorted out to avoid another mandatory respec. The plan is still to release the patch this week, as the team thinks the problem has been found and can be addressed. Still, the important point is that the patch will not go live with a mandatory respec, so you can at least be free of the pain of a free respec yet again.

Neverwinter seems to need frequent respecs too, so I wonder if this is something that is more to do with Cryptic’s game engine or processes.

Mostly to do with Cryptic not being able to balance for jack.

Yep. It’s their engine. They don’t seem to either document the code well and when people leave – their knowledge goes with them, and the coders are left trying to fix issue in poorly documented code they seem to be unable to understand <— That was their reason for dropping "The Foundry" – oh sorry, the last person who had any idea how it's underlying code worked/integrated with the rest of the game has left the company; and no one left knows how to fix it when it breaks – so we're yanking it out.

And yes, having worked as a programmer in my career, I know the idea of 'the less you document, the more they'll need you/be unwilling to let you leave and accede to demands…"; but there were clients and companies who made it a demand in contracts and if you didn't do it, you didn't get paid – and with an MMO's codebase; you'd think IT managers would demand and stay on top of it so that you don't end up with coding staff who barely understand the code they have to deal with to keep your company running and profitable.

Yeah, I remember when they said that about the Foundry, it was quite shocking to hear. As a technical documentation editor myself for a very large software company, I know all too well the perils of engineers not documenting, or poorly documenting, their work. :D

I still haven’t respecced since the last time I had to do this a week or two ago. VERY annoying.

They are free respecs so not cost involved, but it eats a major chunk of the peoples free time. Its the time people got annoyed about. To fully respec a build, cause it takes off traits, apart from ground and space points, you need like 10 mins per character. Most people on this game got at least 5 alts, with the upper ones having over 40. Also previous respecs werent forwarned and cryptic apologised with delay

Hell, these issues with the last two times it occurred weren’t even ACKNOWLEDGED by Cryptic until AFTER massive player outcry – and yes, the STO Devs KNEW the patches in question would cause this beforehand; but somehow TWICE it never made it on to the patch notes.

Yes and the apology came after a lot of delay. I am just a calm person so I typically do not follow an outcry, I just voice my concern and so be it.
