Grim Dawn teases Shattered Realm additions as Crate announces new strategy game

Grim Dawn had a pretty good year in 2020, in spite of the ubiquitous challenges facing the world. According to a dev blog from Crate Entertainment this week, the multiplayer-optional ARPG clocked in at three major patches, five other updates, and “hundreds” of balance changes – not too shabby for a game that isn’t technically an always-on title. And the next big update is almost ready to deploy.

“As you may have hoped, we are nearly finished with v1.1.9.0, our latest major addition to the game,” the studio says. “As shown in our 123 previews 187, fans of the Shattered Realm are about to get some awesome new content. Alongside the newness we are also doing away with a well-known exploit. However, as the gameplay it enabled in the Shattered Realm Guardian Domains has become popularized by the current meta, we are going to simply make it possible to pull bosses without resorting to gimmicky abuse of game mechanics. Should be a refreshing change for those that have been playing with camera zoomed in, rotated, flipped inside out and inverted for the sake of pushing higher shards! All this comes packed with nearly 300 changes to items, so there is something for everyone to look forward to.”

Worth a note is that Crate Entertainment has also just revealed it’s working on another game: Farthest Frontier. It’s a single-player strategy title, so you won’t see it covered on these pages, but it does look pretty!

IronSalamander8 .

We went and finished a 3 player campaign in Grim Dawn last year after a few false starts over the years. It’s an ok game if you like this style of ARPG and kind of nice to be able to hybridize your character.

This other game looks at least somewhat interesting.

Very excited to see what the Crate team does with city building, one of my favorite genres. City builders are hard to get right. Ever since Sierra released Caesar, devs have been trying to hit that sweet spot of challenging building, resource management and population happiness.

Looking forward to this.

Good to see them branching out, Grim Dawn shouldn’t become a “Forever Game” and be left for the fans to enjoy for thousands of hours as is.

Also great to see them try to bring fresh ideas / designs to some genres that might be in need of it even if might not be the best. I’m not a big strategy game player myself, but I’ll grab it cause I adore Crate’s designs.

It’s sad really, if they had released another ARPG I would have bought this but I have no interest in spending money on what ever the hell this new game is.

These devs have been working on Grim Dawn since 2012 so I can understand wanting to step away from arpgs and do something a little different.

The Crate team always said once they did the last expansion (Forgotten God’s) that they would be working on a non arpg as their next project so this seems to be it.

At the same time they also didn’t rule out Grim Dawn 2 being a thing in the future either and possibly what they would consider after the non arpg is completed.

I understand I just hope it doesn’t bite them in the ass, because I doubt I’m not their only customer that won’t buy this.

I’ll buy it twice to make up for you not buying it.

They started crowdfunding from their website (back before kickstarter was a thing) in Feb. of ’10.
It has been fascinating to see the game grow from something insignificant and rough into an unavoidable genre heavyweight.

Rumors are that they do plan on making another ARPG, but its a LONG ways out still.

This strategy game is like a side project of a small part of the team, that turned into something that could be a full product. It does visually look nice, but we will have to see if it can compete with other similar games.
