Melvor Idle is a surprise multi-platform hit based on RuneScape

How do you feel about idle games? Occasionally I’ll pick one up on my phone to fiddle with for a while, but my interest for these sorts of experiences drops off pretty sharply after a couple of days. Perhaps if I cared about the theme, I would stick around for longer?

That might well be the case for Melvor Idle, an idle game that’s openly based on RuneScape. Currently in alpha development, Melvor Idle seeks to replicate the feel of leveling up RuneScape’s many interconnected skills — whether or not you’re actively “playing” this title: “Every skill in this game has its purpose, and interacts with other skills in unique and interesting ways. The training of one skill will benefit others, forcing you to make decisions about the best cause of action to take.”

The surprise success of this sole fan’s pet project enabled him to become a full-time game developer. Even so, he promises that his original vision of never introducing microtransactions into Melvor Idle will continue.

Melvor Idle also is available on Steam, Android, and iOS.

Being invested in the theme is the only thing that keeps me playing the one idle game I do play, which is Idle Champions of the Forgotten Realms. And this looks great too — downloading now!

Idle champions would be amazing had it been a pay-once game. It’s really fun but yuck! to the monetization.

Yeah, it does suck. To be fair though, they do give away a lot of free lock boxes in email codes. But yeah, and the in-game shop is expensive for what it is too!

it can really ruin my enjoyment of an idler if/when I start wondering how big a part of their design is driven by greed. And you’re on point about the prices. I wouldn’t mind spending some money on a game I enjoy but there seems to be a very big disconnect for me between the price tag and how much progress one would stand to gain from said purchase.

Exactly, yeah.

I played it a bit over Christmas and while it’s a cool idea it didn’t quite stick with me. It does have a pretty solid foundation so I’m hoping I’ll enjoy it more after a few patches.

Finally, something worth installing that isn’t Crowd City.
