It’s time to celebrate more than a decade in Star Trek Online very soon, as the game is starting its anniversary event on January 26th. The prize for taking part? A new Tier 6 ship that is once more the product of allied engineering, this time combining Romulan and Klingon engineering to produce the Temer-class raider that promises cloaking, high speed, heavy firepower, and a cool profile that makes everyone look at how neat your ship is.

Players who wish to earn the Temer-class will be given a variety of different options for earning daily progress, ranging from the classic Omega particle stabilization event to special patrols and TFOs providing daily progress. Up to two progress can be earned per day, with 40 total progress needed to earn the raider and 30 days with which to earn all of it.

But wait, there’s more! Apparently PWE is also granting the ability to play a Discovery-era Klingon character.

“We’re proud to announce that, beginning with our anniversary update, you will be able to play a Discovery Era Klingon in Star Trek Online. This type of Klingon will be a new race option upon creating a KDF character, and will come with a brand new outfit exclusive to this race. What will this timelost Warrior think of 2411? That is up to you to decide, as you become a new type of Klingon. tlhIngan maH taHjaj!”

If you’re ready to take the helm of the new ship and Disco Klingons, get ready for the event starting next week and running until February 25th on PC.

Every time I see an article about a new event ship in this game I think about reinstalling it, but then I see how much of a grind getting said ship would be, and I decide it just isn’t worth it.

The problem with Star Trek Online is that it’s two different MMOs in one;

On the one hand, you can play, and complete all of the story line quests with any of the free ships. It’s a wonderful way to dip into the Star Trek universe without any initial outlay. And these constant give aways allow you to get at least one ship of the current max Tier which will allow you to run what are effectively the end game dungeons…

… but at that point it becomes the other kind of MMO, and it’s a constant massive reputation grind to get items and ships to min/max your numbers. Even these free events require 20 days of constant event completion, and they run these events almost every alternative month. And that’s where the Lockboxes and Cash Shop items and horrible monetization comes in, to try and skip the grinds.

Which has a knock on effect because everything everywhere feels tainted by the sense that you could be doing so much better, if you’d only start spending real money. If you’re into the Story play for the actual rewards, they’re massively outclassed by the Lockbox etc stuff.

I know, I know, they have to make their money somehow. But it still feels… a disquieting contradictory experience.

Discovery Klingons? How strange, turning what clearly was a mass hallucination into a playable race 😎

I’m glad they finally remembered that the Romulans also part of the Alliance in terms of ship design. The Khitomer was awesome but had no Romulan influence at all in its design.

Now if only they could give the alliance an in game HQ! heck they should use the Captains Table for it imo it would be an ideal spot that is largely going to waste :)

The ship looks interesting. The last one was based on the idea of a ship that combined Starfleet and Klingon designs. Based on the picture, this one seems to be combining Klingon and Romulan, which aren’t as visually different. To me it looks like a Klingon Bird of Prey merged with one of the sleeker Romulan Warbirds.

There is also a fiery countdown timer on the launcher. So probably something more interesting to be announced next week.
