Diablo II’s remaster is officially in the works

It’s no longer just a rumor; now we know for a fact that Activision Blizzard is working on a remastered version of the classic Diablo II.

Bloomberg reports that the recent corporate reshuffling that landed Vicarious Visions and its 200 employees in Blizzard’s lap was executed in part because the studio was already working on a Blizzard title, presumably called Diablo II: Resurrected. Vicarious Visions said that it had been working with Blizzard “for some time.”

This is an interesting development, as Blizzard itself was handling the remake until the Warcraft III: Reforged fiasco of early 2020. After that mess, Activision took the project away from Blizzard’s Team 1 and partially handed it to Vicarious Visions. So now with this reorganization, Diablo II has come back home once more.

Pardon my skepticism, but I have not seen in any of these articles anywhere where Blizzard has explicitly stated “we are working on a D2 Remaster”. To me, until that time, it is still just rumor.

If I have missed it, can anyone point me to that statement?

Just gunna enjoy d2 while the original lasts if we base our enthusiasm on what’s been delivered in the recent past we can safely say we’re gunna miss the old servers and that we’ll be dealing with another hogwash reinterpretation not worth gob smack but maybe i could be wrong

I absolutely love diablo 1 and 2, my number 1 childhood video game. If your reading this Blizzard and VV developers, don’t mess this up. M for mature means We want blood gore death violance swearing, grusome onslaughts of realistic flesh being torn from demons and Nephilim bones. Leave the colorful animations at home for the kids. We want countless varieties of runewords unique an enchanted weapons and armor endless possibilities of classes and builds. keep the original quests and storyline but add more background, cut scenes and side quests. Again Dont Mess This up Blizzard and VV.

Ps. A Personal request: please keep the endless dungeon out of diablo as it takes away from the waypoint system and storyline.

Just in case, I’m going to try to get my hands on a pirated/non-DRM copy of Diablo 2, and I recommend other people do the same. I’d say people should buy the game first, but I don’t respect Blizzard as a company enough for that.

After the way they handled the Warcraft 3 remaster — forcing an update that was effectively a downgrade on every player, including those that had the original but didn’t purchase the remaster, while making it impossible to get the older and better version without resorting to piracy — I fully support stashing a cracked copy of D2 somewhere safe in case Blizzard pulls the same crap.

We can only hope that Blizzard are not allowed any interaction whatsoever with development. It may have been their ‘baby’ (willing to bet most of the original devs have long since left Blizzard), but they are like negligent, alcoholic parents now and do not deserve custody.

The first two Diablo games, as well as the D2 expansion, were made by the mostly independent Blizzard North studio; the studio imploded after that due to disagreements with the then-owner of Blizzard, Vivendi, over how it would operate from that point on, with most, if not all, of its core developers leaving Blizzard altogether.

I believe there are currently more of the original D2 developers working at Runic Games (the developers of Torchlight, and one of the companies created from the ashes of Blizzard North) than at Blizzard itself.

I just call it Path of Exile. Better name. Rolls off the tongue.

Played Diablo 2 til I got to a point that my character build couldn’t succeed. Apparantly, Blizzard’s take was…..do another character.

Instead, I deleted the game, and haven’t gone back since. Thank goodness my first experiances with the Diablo-style games were with other versions that did it better, imo.

Titan Quest, Yeah!!

The current version of D2 does allow respecs, added back in patch 1.13C. It only took Blizzard some 9 years and 9 months to implement it.

and it will be on mobile only. Jokes aide I wonder how it will be seeing how they manage to fuck of Warcraft 3 I got zero hope for this one. Honestly the past 10-15 years to me Blizzard has become more and more EA to me. EA may be bad but compared to Blizzard The C&C remake was just damn perfectly managed and they worked loads with fans.

The word I see used is “remake”, not remaster. And yes, there is a difference.

Well from my understanding they would have to essentially remake it due to the tech used way back then. It’s not like Warcraft 3 or Starcraft where they can just update the graphical layer – there were specific aspects of the visuals that relied on the now outdated resolution settings from what I recall.

Also this would be the best game to see a proper remake. Bring it up more to D3 or such while keeping the darker bloody visuals.
