Star Trek Online’s new Legendary Anniversary Pack unleashes a torrent of rage from players

In case you somehow missed it, Star Trek Online has released a new Legendary Anniversary Pack to commemorate the game’s 11th year of operation. The reaction from players to this new bundle, however, has not been exactly warm. Unless you consider flames to be warm, but that’s a bit too literal.

The game’s official Reddit is the epicenter of the firestorm, with a number of players decrying a perceived lack of value when compared with the 10th anniversary bundle. “Cryptic chooses to dump this marked-up pile of four ships and lots of needless frills into our collective laps? Is this a joke?” reads one post. “You(Cryptic) had the chance to have this whole ‘Year of Klingon’ thing go down in STO history as something really great,” opines another post. “The big KDF legendary bundle would have been the ultimate finisher. Instead, we’re getting a whimper.”

Other complaints with the bundle include the fact that two Federation ships are included in what is otherwise a Klingon bundle and a concern that the bundle could endanger the release of future KDF legendary ships. There’s also, of course, a referential meme response and a simple angrily titled post.

With that said, at least one Redditor has put up some kudos to the dev team for what they perceive to be otherwise worthwhile updates to STO on the whole. “I know that with the earlier announcement of the new anniversary legendary bundle, you guys have been strapped down under a heat lamp,” begins the post, “but I wanted to take a moment to thank y’all for what has been a mostly well-received anniversary event.”

There was some anger before the release of the first Legendary Bundle as well, but nothing quite like that had been released before and the true value of the “no filler” version of that bundle hadn’t been fully realized until it was released. This time around however it’s a big difference and the rage is actually justified. The players are being offered an extremely over priced bundle with only 4 legendary ships that statistically don’t live up to the legendary standard set by the first bundle, as well as 2 T6 coupons, which can’t even be used to get the “newest” Zen store ships only older ones which most players already have and more filler that seemingly no one seems to want (for good reason), with no option for a cost reducing “ships only” version like the first bundle released with.

So in essence players are being offered far less ships with inferior to legendary statistics and a bunch of filler items to puff up the price of the bundle but this time around the players are being forced to absorb the cost of the filler. Considering the value the “no filler” version of the first legendary bundle offered, as well as the fact we’re in the middle of a Pandemic and money is very tight for so many people, it’s no wonder why this 2021 legendary bundle garnering so much rage.

Aside from obviously fewer ships I don’t see the problem. Especially with the glob on side arguments, like how this is supposedly a “klingon bundle” or how a 200 dollar macrotransaction would save the year of the klingon. Save it from what? I don’t know what people were expecting but (Aside from the game continuing to be buffeted by the whims of the ongoing tv production) it seemed pretty good to me. Particularly now with the (thank god) new character customization options.

The bundle annoys me because they jack up the price by throwing in a bunch of random “not ship” junk. And also because out of the 100 or so Klingon ships, they couldn’t find FOUR to include in the bundle? Really? I’d rather they split into two bundles. Even with the “everyone can fly ships from every faction,” this isn’t a good deal. People who *want* to play a KLingon Defense Force character might not want the Starfleet ships, and it’s pretty likely that many Starfleet players don’t want the Klingon ones.

This bundle seems designed to make sure that *everyone* is paying extra for stuff they don’t want.

I mean, if they absolutely, completely couldn’t find four Klingon ships, they could still have done two Klingon and two Allied Race legendary ships. The Orions and Nausicaans are both mercenary space pirates anyway, and it’s a bit of lore (that Cryptic seems to have forgotten almost as soon as they added it) that the Gorn have a couple rebel fleets that refuse to follow the Empire. They could even have included the tiny selection of consoles on the (now completely obsolete) lower tier versions of the allied faction ships.

There was a lot of player rage against the first Anniversary bundle too. It ended up being one of the hottest selling bundles with people regularly asking when it will return so they can buy it. I expect this one to be similar.

That said, I don’t think the value on this bundle is very good so I’m passing on it. It’s loaded with extra items I don’t want or need and very light on ships. Only 4 Legendary ships with 2 tokens for existing ships isn’t great for the price they want. The rest of the filler items don’t interest me. I’m sure it will still sell well enough for them though.

Yes the 10 pack brought around much rage. However i don’t think the second packs lack of ships is helping this Anniversary pack. Your right though i think a lot of people will rage, and still buy it.
Just like you i am really debating buying it, I do want the Excelsior and Ambassador too but the other filler is just not giving me enough reason.

Didn’t the devs remove the faction barriors between Klingons and Feds (and Romulans) so that the Klingons could fly any ship? So that a “Federation” ship is technically also a Klingon ship?

Maybe Cryptic might have marketed it better or even built toward it in-game by having an epic mission requiring the Klingons to “borrow” a Federation ship to save the Klingon Empire as well as the Federation and as a reward the Federation and Klingons allow cross-faction ownership of starships.

So, in-game, you have Klingon captain flying Federation ships to complete a mission arc. Maybe that would have been more palatable.

Technically true, but ask yourself IF you are playing a Klingon, do you want to play a Klingon in a Federation vessel or a Klingon in a bada** Klingon vessel? :)
The Only Klinks in fed vessels are a tiny handful of RP’ers whose story supports it and the min maxers who are only doing it not for the aesthetics but for the numbers.

I see your point.

On the other hand, you would be literally flying in the ultimate trophy of combat, your enemy’s starship. Some warriors collected dogtags, scalps, sculls, bones, hair, photos, you’d have a frelling SHIP as a memento of victory. What greater accolade can their be than defeating your opponent with his OWN WEAPON?

What’s that? We’re at peace now? Allies? What better way to ensure the peace is kept than flying your (former) enemys vessel, mastering, outshining your (former) enemy in combat with his own ship, learning it like your own batleth so that the alliance breaks down, you know your (new) enemy’s ship capabilities inside and out?

But again that falls largely into the RP reasons for having a fed ship, and although you or I may RP that and be quite content, most folks do not fall into that category, so that sort of reasoning to them is largely moot.

In all honesty, I think they would have been better served if making this sort of approach of making the other two ships Alliance ships, rather than Federation as then at least from a design standpoint they would have been entirely relevant to any faction irrespective of how they looked.

Thought in passing: KDF characters should get faction-limited, character-bound cosmetic shields that let them “repaint” Fed ship hulls with the distinctive Klingon green/gold scales and red engines. (And maybe obviously “paint over” any UFP logos.)

Make those Fed ships actually look like seized prizes. :)

The closest you can do for now is if you got the Alliance Vanity Shield (which was from a promotion, I think.) That lets you recolor the ship in the White/Black/Gold pattern of the last two Anniversary ships, and changes the logos to the Alliance.

Otherwise, you’ll need to grind to T6 Reputation or pay a bazillion credits for a lockbox vanity shield… None of which actually look like the traditional Klingon hull materials, but there’s a few choices for at least “not Starfleet.”

Stuff like this is why I decided to leave the game.

While the value of items one by one isnt bad on the introductory(discount) its an unbreakable pack so if one wants one ship, bad luck. Same if someone can afford one.

Then there is their build up on livestreams that a KDF pack will be coming and they give a mixed pack. They could had said from start it would be a mixed unbreakable one.

Add to it they put up for sale last year a 10 legendary ship pack(not much more expensive on introductory) and now they gave 2 ships for KDF. Other than those two in the entire YoK they released the carrier (one ship) as part of the carrier multifaction pack while they continued introducing federation ship of the line and legendary packs, skin renews and in, usual through 2020, STO fashion lockbox and promo boxes were also mostly Fed themed. Romulans werent in much better luck as they got 1 legendary ship as part of a 12k zen pack, Jem’hadar got no legendary ship either.

Its a shame cause at least on story and revamping old content fronts they put some good effort(I really enjoyed it) and their marketing choices are undermining how people will view this season for years to come while they could instead had been capitalizing on the attention YoK and Anniversary brought with them having their strongest active player numbers since 2018. Whoever is in charge of their financial department is undermining his collegues hard work
