The Office stars talk about the making of the Second Life episode

Fans of NBC’s The Office probably remember the 2007 episode “Local Ad” where the Dunder Mifflin team made a commercial for the Scranton branch. Tucked into that episode was a B-story about Dwight channeling his depression into playing Second Life at work, which resulted in a bit of chatter and some scenes of the virtual world in action.

Well, on this week’s Office Ladies podcast, stars Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey tackled questions about this show — including how they got the Second Life segments made. The hosts said that The Office coordinated with Linden Labs, including sending them pictures of Rainn Wilson and John Krasinski so that the studio could make them into avatars.

You can give it a listen below (the Second Life discussion starts at 10:05):

I’m always fascinated when a real, proper game or piece of software is used in a film or show. I remember being very excited the first time I saw this episode! :D

Did they actually show it in a way that felt like the script writers knew how to use a mouse? Because I remember seeing the “MMO” episodes of NCIS… “Wow, you have the high score in every MMO on the planet!”

The CSI take on Second Life was… well, entirely consistent with their accuracy anywhere else, at least. Such as the episode where the victim got thrown in a piranha tank and somehow 50 pounds of fish were able to dispose of 120 pounds of people so completely they had to test them for “people cholesterol” to be sure they were involved. Including the bones, apparently.

It was pretty good actually, as far as I could tell. But yeah, I remember a CSI from a few years ago, where someone was made out to be a total psycho because of ‘violent games’. I forget if it was SL they used, but there was something in there that was being totally misrepresented for sure.

Lol. Why is it offensive? Also, what do you rate as the most offensive thing on this site and why?

Second Life was the ultimate sandbox. Lots of fun memories from that place. Don’t know why someone would find it offensive to mention it…

There’s a faction of people who know for certain that Second Life only exists for erotic role play and Furries and bondage stuff. (And erotic Furry bondage stuff, for that matter.)
