The Daily Grind: What’s your favorite mount in an MMO?

In a lot of MMOs, the way to get from place to place as fast as possible is by riding something. You sit on the back of an animal and you go. There are a lot of mounts in MMOs as a result, covering everything from actual stuff human beings ride realistically (like horses) to things that don’t even exist (giant rolling beetles, dragons, special fairy birds from another world). And among all these mounts, our question is simple: which one is your favorite?

Sometimes this is a question that comes down to game mechanics, because a certain mount or another confers a benefit others don’t. Other times it comes down to rarity, as mounts are frequently a prestige reward to show accomplishment. Still other times it’s just simple aesthetics, and even if your giant shaggy dog mount is just a normal giant shaggy dog, it’s your giant shaggy dog. So what’s your favorite mount in an MMO?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

I don’t really have ‘favorites’ generally. I can’t think of one off the top of my head. There was quite a few I enjoyed over the years…

In ESO right now it’s my feet. Since the cp revamp you can boost your out-of-combat run speed and now I run as fast as my horse.

I mean, technically you already could…it was in the radial of the before revamp. Just most people probably didn’t.

But are you talking…major expedition/major gallop and full stable + CP points in? Or just faster than an un-pointed stable horse…which you start off being able to run faster than your mount’s speed with sprint…?

There’s several I love, but my favorites are that floating gnome disk from EQ2, my unholy steed from AA points on my SK in EQ, the throne in SWTOR, the goblin car from their starting area (the regular goblin mount is pretty fun, but I want the radio back! XD), and my hovering chair with the fiery ball things (can’t recall their name) from FF14.

Springer in GW2.

I tend to go with things with a steampunk or magitek aesthetic if available; flying machines, mechanical wings, robotic mounts, motorcycles, etc. Better if it looks steam- or magic-powered, has a jury-rigged appearance, has lots of detains in brass or gold, and so on.

If that isn’t available, I tend to go with the most inconspicuous mount I can find; in TSW, for example, whenever I wasn’t using the Franken-chopper, I was using the plain old running (i.e., the speed of a mount with no visible mount).

Without a doubt, my favorite mount was the Nightmare Steed from TSW. Loved riding that horse with flames bursting everywhere. Second favorite was the yellow Bumble scooter. In SWTOR, each character has a mount that fits her personality so I can’t say I have one clear favorite there, although I am partial to Vectron model mounts.

In LOTRO I used to like Steed of Bright Days, in WoW there was the Heart of the Aspects which I liked. And in FFXIV there was this mount:

blah blazh

The mounts in GW2 are the best for me. My favorite is the roller beetle

GW2s implementation of mounts is one of the many things that keep it in contention for best MMO of all time imo. Every one of them is interesting, enjoyable and different, every one of them changes the game for you in some way shape or form rather than just being a speed buff. I like the jackal, but always been envious of those warclaws!

I prefer horse mounts. Right now my favorite is the Steed of the North Ithilien Wilds in LOTRO, which is a deed mount requiring 250 herbalist quests. Assuming you’ve opened all 10 Herbalist quests with the Host of the West, it take 20 days (with the wrapper quest) to complete. I started at level 107 and finished at level 122 on the alt that most recently acquired it.

Like the beautiful white mount rewarded for the World Renown deed, this one stands out for uniqueness. It’s a bit of grind, as you’d expect, to get it, but well worth it. The ordinary mount is beautiful but it also comes with warsteed trappings, adding to its value.

Lastly, you receive tokens for completing the quests, which you can then trade for Anfalas emplowerment scrolls for Legendary item advancement.

Win/win all around.

I have no favorite mount per say…

…rather I have mounts that fit the characters I roll. And thus, use them as an extension of their costume where ever I can.
