The Daily Grind: What classes in your current MMO desperately need some love?

24

So a while back I was thinking of rolling up a new Mastermind on the City of Heroes rogue servers I play, and so I naturally went to the forums to check with the expert build min-maxers to see whether the pairings I had in mind are any good.

Friends, they are definitely not any good.

I had been considering a Mercenaries or Ninja build, since I haven’t even looked at either since live, and really not even much then, since they had a reputation for kinda sucking. And they still suck, at least on this server, which more or less sticks to the original balance of the game, which blows my mind. I’m sure there’s a good reason for it. The original devs let them suck for seven years! The rogue server devs are volunteers and busy with a zillion other things to do besides completely overhauling sets that would be unpopular because of their graphics even if they were powerful. I get it. And yet… these powersets have been around since 2005. It’s kinda wild that they’re still in this state, basically going to waste.

What class (or spec or class combo or build or whatever ya got) in your current main MMO seriously needs some love?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

In Warframe: I think Nyx and Loki desperately need to be reworked.

Nyx has one really useful power (homing darts that completely strip enemy damage resistance and shields… but only for a small number of enemies at a time.) She’s got one that’s situationally useful in Chaos, which makes enemies attack targets at random. (IE, hopefully not her.) Mind Control is really pretty pointless because of how enemy damage and enemy HP scales at higher levels. NPC damage has to scale to feel “fair” when they shoot player characters, who rarely have more than a thousand HP. Meanwhile, enemies have tens or even hundreds of thousands of HP and massive damage resistance. So an enemy that would turn a player into salsa with a single shot can still barely scratch another NPC. And Assimilate has a similar problem – at the levels where you’d need it to avoid dying, its pretty much useless for actually doing damage. Her passive ability is that enemies suffer a small accuracy debuff when shooting her – about 20% of shots will miss. Which isn’t nothing, but it’s also basically impossible to notice.

Loki is just kind of broken at this point. His first power creates a Decoy. It has barely any HP, and instantly taunts everything in range. At even mid-tier content it won’t even survive for a couple of seconds unless you can stick it somewhere that enemies can be taunted by it but can’t hit it. His invisibility power is pretty okay. Switch Teleport causes Loki to trade places with a target. Given that most combat in the game now has “between five and dozens” of enemies attacking at once, Switch Teleport is really only useful in two situations – using it to force certain Defense Target NPCs to move faster/where you want them, and for trolling. And Radial Disarm is… okay. It’s not bad, it makes enemies stop shooting, it’s a thing that exists. The two big problem powers are Decoy and Switch Teleport. *Several* other Warframes get a power that does essentially the same thing, distract enemies. Except their decoy objects last way longer, are actually invulnerable, or both. And Switch Teleport really has no reason to exist. And his passive power is that he can cling to walls for longer than any other Warframe. A thing that basically NO ONE does in the current game.

And to be clear, I LIKE both Loki and Nyx. I just wish they were actually useful and relevant in nearly any content, instead of being essentially a self-inflicted Hard Mode.

Balance druid. Sure it’s outperforming everyone right now, but the class fantasy and mechanics are trash.

Want to see it go back to a nature based caster, not this sun/moon astrological eclipse mess they made.

Mercs MMs in CoH and Guardians in GW2.

Neither of them do much of anything well.

Current MMO?

I’m not playing any.

The comments about FFXIV have been making me ponder going back there for a little bit…but that’d involve grabbing the new update or whatever to it…I left before they added the blue mage or whatever, and while it was fun for awhile, there was only so much to do and quite a few limitations I was bothered by. I do miss the loading screen song though.

I keep typing out a lot of health info and then deleting it, because you folks don’t need it…let’s just say my health’s been @(#% lately and it’s finally starting to show a slight improvement in some ways. Waiting on a new chair since my old one self destructed. May turn into one of those people on Wall-E. (Already basically am.) But I bought a fancy uber expensive rocker/recliner and am considering a swivel/articulating monitor idea with computer tower next to chair. Trying to do some squats every day to gain some muscle mass back…and maybe get a bit of activity back in my life too. So I need to find a better balance between too lazy and ‘this is more than I can do physically’.

Games where you end up stuck waiting for things/can’t just play at your leisure are bad for keeping you plunked in a chair not moving…I think I need a little more self-love/taking care of myself than I do a game right now. Granted I do want to find another game sometime…(Still waiting for Cyberpunk to drop to about half price, then I’ll probably buy that..)

In FFXIV there is always something to do if you don’t play it only for grinding dungeons. Balmung has huge social community which is very active at any time of the day especially in city like Ul’dah so if you just want to interact with people, be it either general socialization or RPing specific character – there are always people to do that with. And they host many RP events on Balmung and other servers on same data center every day. And you can always play at your leisure if all you want is to socialize with people instead of using game as a second job.

Or if you don’t like active social interaction which involves using text chat or emotes – you can always go for something else like EVE Online, which is a very solo-friendly game which you can also play at your own leisure.

I believe I was on Cactuar, and will probably never move, because that server represents me, spiky on the outside and squishy on the inside! :P

I actually used to enjoy just running around doing FATES with randoms, but after you’ve maxed out there’s less reason to do them. Would randomly have conversations with people after sometimes. Once I got my Kweh bird to start healing me, I tended to actually START some of those bigger/harder chain FATES and have people start showing up midway once they realized one was going…and eventually there’d be a whole bunch of people poking it with me…and everyone benefits when it completes…but there was a mount that required like…3,000 of them or something, and I managed to finish it to earn the crossover glow sperm mount and was burnt out on them for a little while. Also over-did on Gold Saucer and got that expensive mount there…so yeah. I tend to over-do, and need to putz around more if I were to return…

I’m not sure, really, because I always play whatever feels fun without worries over dps checks and whatnot. But… if you take a quick peek at the WoW forums, it seems like they’re all utter garbage, completely pointless and in need of immediate extensive care.

Yes, cause robots walk too loudly.

I couldn’t take all the noise and deleted him. Why the bots are so strong always bothered me. It’s like if you make a MM you have to pick bots.

You only have to check the latest DPS charts on wowheads articles to see which classes in WoW need love.

https://www.wowhead.com/news/analysis-of-shadowlands-dps-in-mythic-castle-nathria-patch-9-0-5-launch-321386

All 3 hunter specs are on the very bottom. At least every other class has at least one spec that is at least performing in the mid range average (rank 15 to 5)

I gave Survival a try just to see, and it really does feel like a completely abandoned part of the game.

After 15+ years, the ridiculousness of it all is that the data is there, provided by hundreds of thousands of players. Its not some big mystery that the devs are simple not sure of. The fact that they cant balance it better when it really is just tweaking numbers, just kinda points toward either incompetence or apathy, or both.

I typically play what is fun, but this is my two credits.

SWTOR

I main a Power Tech tank and compared to the other two tanking specs , it’s by far under tuned.

One has high armor and non stop instant heals, while the other has capped resistances and heal over times.

Meanwhile the Power Tech mind of flounders the two, neither great armor, nor a way to handle those oh crap scenarios.

Ah well, it’s not gonna change , but damn do I love the character!
