The Daily Grind: What’s the oldest MMORPG character you still play?

Every year or so we’ll do a conversation topic about the oldest MMO we still play. But realistically, the same couple of MMOs always come up, and it’s not the most interesting discussion. Old things are old.

But MOP reader Doug gave us some great inspiration in a tweet the other day about his oldest characters. That one is much more likely to be all over the place. For example, I don’t even own my very oldest MMORPG characters anymore, since I sold my original UO account a million years ago now. And with so many MMOs sunsetted, a lot of my toons are simply inaccessible. I’ve started over with them on rogue servers, but they are definitely not the same. Even so, for me it’s probably my disco archer in Ultima Online, whom I rolled on a new UO account at some point between DAOC and WoW. She’s still around, and I do play her every year or so when I go back.

So let’s go that route this week! What’s the oldest MMORPG character you still play, and what game is it in?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

I’ve been playing the same GW2 main (my Ranger) since launch.

Backstory-wise, she’s the same character I played in GW1, so in terms of story rather than mechanics she’s been around even longer.

My STO main dates from the 2010 open beta.

I have a LotRO character from late 2007 that I don’t adventure with anymore, but I pull out for festivals (she has the largest collection of mounts and pets you can’t get anymore).

Either EVE Online characters or the one from original TSW.

Vanilla WoW – Dwarven hunter – created at launch, rerolled to a new server following guild in summer ’06 and has been active ever since. Still uses his original pet Lupos (Spot). Still enjoy playing him!

My original STO closed beta character (from 2009) – yes, I recreated him after the last closed beta wipe – but I remade him look for look and original skill for skill and have been playing him since the STO open beta/soft launch in back in 2010.

I have older MMO characters from EQ, CoH (don’t play the fan run servers) and WoW – but I don’t play those MMOs anymore (haven’t logged into EQ since 2004 and I logged into WoW for a couple days when friends tried to get me to come back during “Mists of Panderia” in 2012.

I remade a version of my original EQ Human Monk character (circa 1999 – 2003) for FFXIV <— and I play him as my main in that game; but he was recreated in FFXIV in 2016.

The oldest pencil & paper RPG character I transferred (first into CoH and then CO) was a character I created as 'me' for a Champions superhero campaign in 1984 and he still exists on CO (he was transferred/re-created for that MMO at its launch in 2008, but I maybe log into CO once a year for 5 minutes, look around and log out again. And it's sad because overall I didn't find it to be a horrible game – but I don't play abandoned MMOs that never see a level cap boost and maybe gets some phoned in content (what can 2 active developers do?) once a year on average.

Almost 37 years. The character is getting kinda creaky and old at this point, but damn if it’s not been one ‘adventure’ after another…the current adventure includes putting a mask on your face and venturing forth only once in a blue moon and avoiding the rest of humanity as best as one can because they are attempting to spread a pox upon us all. Once in a great while one has to venture forth for needed items or equipment, or an occasional piece of furniture to ‘play house’ with, and one sometimes hears or sees people ‘generally chatting’ and wonders how long until they will need a resurrection, only to realize you’re all out of scrolls. One wonders how long until the gravediggers will have had enough and create their own cult to push back against the other cult’s belief systems. They wonder how many friends or even casual acquaintances won’t return because they forgot to pay their sub fees. Then one returns to solo play because of a sadness about the state of things and a desire to return to the fun that was once had.

I admit that gave me a smile, but it was a sad one.

My Druid in WoW. I created that character Christmas of 2006 and it’s still my main MMO character today.

My Dwarf Minstrel from the early days of LOTRO.

First ever character was my Barbarian Warrior from Halas, EverQuest… 22 years ago, give or take.
