Betawatch: Pantheon aims high for alpha test and hits low with NFTs

You're the real thing.

Ah, Pantheon, you’re aiming high for your still-undated alpha test! That’s a really good thing. It’s why we’re rooting for you as a scrappy underdog! Or it’s why we were rooting for you before you started selling NFT artwork, thus turning yourself into a simultaneous villain for Batman and Captain Planet in one fell swoop. Darn it, guys.

Less disappointing beta news ensues:

See? Far less disappointing there across the board. Hopefully the games down in the list below are also not disappointing, but there’s always the chance something disappoints you by pretending it’s still in testing while having a functional cash shop or whatever. If so, let us know down in the comments so we can address that.

As always, we consider an MMO to be in open testing if it features free, public signups and will server wipe prior to launch. An MMO is marked in closed testing if it’s running a private test phase that cannot freely be accessed by the general public; it’s usually under NDA as well. Early access and crowdfunded MMOs whose tests we deem legitimate will be included. So-called “open beta” soft-launch MMOs with cash shops, no sign of launch in the west, or limited interest for our readers will not be listed; we also do not list expansions, with occasional exceptions.

AdventureQuest 3D: Open beta
Arcfall: Pre-alpha

Yes, MMO gamers, you too can perform the unpaid quality-control work otherwise known as game testing! Check out Massively Overpowered’s Betawatch every week for a run-down of MMOs that are still on the road to launch, even if they appear to have set up a permanent residence in a shed called early access.

Making it all the more obvious this project is a huge grift.

Anyone stupid enough to get suckered into the NFT craze deserves all they get. It’s a sillier concept than Bitcoin itself. And that’s saying something. Magical internet money!

It’s easy to rail on Pantheon for this, but many big name publishers are doing this. I’ve seen people I have respect for get into it sadly. It’s fools gold of course, but even the best of us falls for dumb schemes I guess.

Indeed many publishers are doing it… but that doesn’t excuse Pantheon from deserving to be railed on. They ALL deserve to be railed on for their stupidity and greed.
