The Daily Grind: What mount type do you wish more MMOs would offer?

Here are some of my mounts in Final Fantasy XIV: a sheep. A flying pig. A giant moss-covered sneezing monster. A drifting stalk of a plant. An entire bed. All of these mounts are wonderful because there’s nothing like the sheer impact of storming into battle whilst lying back and relaxing on a bed that somehow hovers under its own power. How does that work? I don’t know; I just know that one of my mounts is an entire actual bed.

Of course, I’m pretty sure every game that offers mounts has a few such items. Sure, we’ve long accepted that basically anything rideable is going to be desired as a player mount, and some of those things wind up being predictable like some sort of pony, some kind of bird, and something vaguely draconic. But what about weirder mounts? What sort of mount should more MMOs offer, either because it’s cool or just because it’s so silly?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

I’d like to see more mounts that you catch/breed/train, such as in BDO. I also agree with the comment below about RDR2, the horses are amazing. There’s some kind of random personality trait assigned to each along with breed characteristics, so one horse might be a bit mean, one might hate fire while another is calm about it, and so on. I had one that hated dogs. I liked the partnership with a mount who had an actual personality.

Fun, off-the-cuff mounts. I am a… hoarder of mounts and minions in games. When it came to World of Warcraft, it was things like the Mimiron’s Head that I was more interested in. The game had an honestly sickening amount of Horse mounts, and Dragons were second on that. But weird junk? Yes, please. Side benefit of me taking the Engineering profession on my main was access to things like the Motorcycle or Rocket Mounts, which I loved using.
Final Fantasy 14 has a healthy variety too, and it does a good enough of a job ensuring mounts remain unique. Chocobos can be customized wildly so you don’t have everyone riding the same exact one. The ‘Primal’ mounts and their cap-offs usually have some unique flair for them, even if it can get a little samey. And there’s a good mix of real, absurd, and mechanical mounts as well. I want a gorilla carrying me around? Can do! Personal speeder? yep! A… giant dandelion…? Yeah, I mean of course, sure…
And just a car? Like, a modern car…? Got that too!

However, I will agree it does need a little extra here and there. Some gelatinous creature that wraps around you and rolls you around, or like… some weird Dungbeetle like thing that rolls you in a ball and moves that way? Or heck, just something like the Gourmand boss, who devours you in its belly and runs off!
And… well, honestly? Give my catboy a motorcycle. We got airships, we got Magitek Armor, and they have the Fenrir Motorcycle mount on sale via cash shop, but… No in-game earned one? Come on! We can get illicit Garlean tech to operate and travel in, tame myths themselves, and ride on a giant puffball… But not Cid nor any of the tinkering-minded folk of Ishgard have ever thought of making a vehicle with two wheels?
Apparently not. The man is smart enough to figure out how to mess with multi-dimensional beings and hack their systems as well as literally just… simulate magical theory and run algorithms to calculate reactions to it… But can’t figure out how to assemble two wheels on a simple frame and power it with an engine that they’d definitely have just laying about gathering dust.

… We also need a Hildebrand mount, so we can have that theme used elsewhere if Square is intent on just… ignoring the character and side-story for a second expansion.

Less birds or dragons or horses. More mounts with amusing animations and ridiculous looks. Like a Fat Moogle mount in FFXIV. Or the Gobbue mount. I play MMORPGs to get away from deficiencies of real life, including extremely overused fantasy creatures like dragons which exist in many media already. Just as I play MMORPGs for interacting and socializing with other people, so I am perfectly fine if the mount is just a transportation vehicle which does not have any mini-games you have to waste time on like raising the reputation of the mount or training it or feeding it specific type of things to make it go faster or have more healthpoints.

I’m more interested in mechanics than aesthetics at this point.

Mounts with super-jump.

Mounts that apply shader effects to how the world renders.

Mounts that can carry NPC companions / pets or the people grouped with you.

Mounts that can be used in combat.

The only mounts I strongly remember (from MMGs I’ve played) are the ones from Fallen Earth, that were persistent on the landscape, could be tweaked for certain roles (capacity, combat, speed), and had an independent inventory you could take things in and out of.

Beyond FE and LotRO’s warhorses, MMG mounts are mostly just different colors of Magic Pants.

Two points on this discussion: what mount I personally would like to see…and what mount would I buy for $. You know, fantasy may invent everything…

What I would like to see: in Lotro – elks and, of course, long demanded Battle Pig. So that my brave Dwarf champion could rush into battle screaming “Baruk khazad!” on this pure Dwarven mount. Elks – just because they look nice.
Out of Lotro – maybe player-ridden battle Dragons.

Would I buy any Rainbow Elk, Stinky Pig or Pink battledragon for just NN dollars? Nope.

I think NEVERWINTER ONLINE and GUILD WARS 2 might have the widest variety of mounts. The latter has hopping, flying and swimming mounts and the former has mounts literally has a block of quivering gelatine that you “ride” inside without suffocating as well as some mounts that double as combat pets.

Although my favorite mounts are starships. STAR TREK ONLINE’s Odyssey class Tier-5 starship is my favorite starship ever, not just for STO, STAR TREK, but head and shoulders above all the rest. (Though I have issues with the double decker bridge where some folk are hidden from the others on the bridge.) Starships double as mounts and as housing. 🚀👍🖖
