The Daily Grind: What should Guild Wars 2 do beyond Cantha?

33

I know that a whole lot is riding on Guild Wars 2 sticking the landing for End of Dragons. It’s not just that Cantha is one of the most-requested destinations for the MMO; it’s the fact that the recent content offerings haven’t been blockbuster affairs and the studio really needs a huge hit to restore player confidence (and revenue).

But what I’m curious about today is what ArenaNet should be doing beyond the expansion — if it even is thinking that far. Should work immediately start on another expansion once End of Dragons ships? Is it time to bring back a full-fledged season of the living world? Are there certain features (housing?) that you’d make a priority?

What should Guild Wars 2 do beyond Cantha?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Bring us the Utopia expansion that never happened.

Bonus points if it’s for GW1.

ANet should put the game out of it’s misery and fully commit to another game, because what ever the hell they’re doing now is disgusting and insulting to players of GW2 with what ever passes for IBS.

I’m not wrong, this upcoming expansion needs to be on par with Eye of the North or this game will fade away like Rift’s slow death until Trion went bankrupt.

This is a weird hill to die on.

I just remember when GW2 was a great game, to me it looks like it injured it self with self inflicted wounds like WoW did to it self.

I’m sorry, what? When was GW2 better? It was always the same, except the talent system. It was actually worse at launch because besides running dungeons with 4 warrs and 1 mesmer, there was nothing to do. WvW and SPvP lost it’s luster one week after, SPECIALLY SPvP considering it had the ticket system and gave almost no rewards outside some cosmetics.

Maybe you don’t like GW2’s direction, sure. Suit yourself. But it was never better.

Errr…. say wut, mate? [/Orkish ] I don’t like fractals and raids at all, and I haven’t actually played the game in forever. But I completely don’t see this whole “slap in the face” thing. Care to take a deep breath and maybe, you know, clarify what in the world you’re on about?

I don’t own the most recent expansion, so I only know what I’ve seen in articles here. What I’ve seen of the story isn’t any more terrible than most MMO questlines. They’re almost universally kind of awful, since they always seem to hinge on either

A) “You are the Chosen One, and only YOU can save the world! Now shut up and LFG with at least four other Chosen Ones, because you’re also not allowed to do it by yourself.”

or

B) “You are the Chosen One, but you are also the least important person in the story. Now shut up and help this Very Important NPC fulfill their destiny while they shout cliches at you.”

In any case, you’re shouting gibberish like it’s somehow tied to some immutable law that everyone just KNOWS. (Hint: I have basically no idea what has you so upset.) I know that those are the names of two more of the big dragons, and that the last little bit of the Living World story was a bit meh. I’ve read the short article describing it here on Massively. Based on that, I don’t see anything exceptionally terrible (by MMO writing standards anyway.)

Once again, can you please take a deep breath and actually *explain* what has you so upset about this? Because right now this feels kind of like that Star Trek episode with the race that only communicated by shouting historical metaphors that no one else had the context to understand. “Tannagra! When the walls fell!”

Gimme more zones like Drizzlewood! I’d be happy if they went back to making masteries more meaningful again and transitioned to a properly planned and budgeted season before moving to the next expansion.

Mostly, I just want the company/game to settle down and find a groove so we’re not getting wildly uneven communications, updates, and left with huge black holes of information (who’s running Anet? Who is leading GW2? etc.)

At this point I wouldn’t even mind slowly starting the work on GW3 and taking the lessons learned from GW1/2 and putting those into practice…with a new engine that’s not locked to dx9 doesn’t run like complete and utter garbage even on a higher end machine. It’s great getting 144+ FPS with maxed settings while looking at the sky and stuff, not so great when I’m in a smaller event with players largely turned off (and many enemies even not appearing) while my FPS overs in the 30-40 range.

So…a big tech update. I hope they have a big tech/performance update. The game desperately needs it. It’s pretty, and some of the newer textures/models like the ones used on Primordus’ head look great, but it’s not exactly the most graphically demanding game out there bey a long, long, longshot.

Anet lost its chance for GW3!
Too many expensive failed projects behind the curtains, which lead to too much brain drain!
It needs more than only Cantha’s expansion to be successful to restore faith with NCSoft!
Right now they are not even able to scrap enough of a budget for another race, less so for a new MMO with ~5 years development!

After so much ice and soon Far East vibes, i wouldn’t mind a theme with archipelagos and Polynesian inspirations! Let’s sail further east or west of Tyria, like they did!

Split the company half on expansions and half on living world. Give the expansion team 2 years to create an expansion while the living world team focuses on bridging the stories.

They should add updrafts and leylines to old zones.

Of course they should also add new mission content to old zones as well.

Yeah, I know. Neither of those will ever happen.

Guild Wars 2: Classic

Announce Guild Wars 3 and completely abandon Guild Wars 2. After all, that’s what they did after only 2 and a half years after GW was released, so GW2 certainly has had a good run.

I would say go back to GW and finish Beyond, and the Mad King Thorn stuff they were going to do, and maybe even do area expansions for Cantha and Elona, like EotN expanded Tyria, but I don’t want the current team anywhere near the game.

Maybe now that the family graveyard is empty and there’s no more dead corpses to bang on they’ll finally do what they should have been doing all along and come up with something new and interesting?

What’s East of Ascalon? What’s West of Maguuma? These devs are just so boring.

What’s East of Ascalon? What’s West of Maguuma?

More pretty forests waiting for Charr Progress and more jungle respectively.

One of the biggest missed opportunities in GW2, imo, was never adding new playable races.

Id even be ok with there not being voice acted cutscenes with the new races (oh noes, ill have to read). Or, simply reusing voices from other races.

Another missed opportunity is housing.

At this point however, I feel like we need a new GW game. Seems that the request for things are far exceeding the ability for the devs to put it into the current game.

Honestly, i think GW3 would be welcome if we’re talking a new skillsystem ( i would love GW to implement the SWG skillsystem where you can pretty much build your toon how you feel like it, including crafters ), but i don’t think GW2 has that many issues with housing? It just feels like they don’t want to implement it.

They could use the Wildstar housing system and just allow us to manipulate the Home Instance.
