WRUP: What’s in the bitey surprise bag edition

Trashy.

What’s up, folks, today’s What Are You Playing is all about opening up the bitey surprise bag! The last one of these we opened had some broken glass, an old newspaper, unidentifiable slime, a live raccoon, spoiled milk, a non-functional smoke detector, three pounds of hair, and a rotten apple! I’m really excited about this next surprise bag, and not just because I’m pretty sure that I have all the feeling back in my legs so I can outrun the people yelling at me not to put my mouth on the bitey surprise bag!

Here’s today’s bag, and… wait, no, they’re running at me and yelling now. Darn it! My wonderful bitey surprise! I just want to take a big bite of the plastic and see what’s in the surprise bag, it usually tastes really bad and a lot of the time it means I need to go to the hospital again! And it’s free! That’s right, you can get your own bitey surprise bag absolutely free at your municipal waste depository! Oops, I should stop narrating, the people are catching up to me. Hope to catch a bitey snack next week!

Bonus question: What tends to make you want to leave a gathering of people (current events notwithstanding)?

Andrew Ross (@dengarsw): Gonna do some Pokemon Go and Pokemon Snap. The latter is just so immersive, and my friend and I have doing it on voice chat so we kind of figure things out together. But between that and the picture album for Monster Hunter Rise, I’m kind of wondering why more games don’t have some kind of in-game photo journal/rating system.

Pretending COVID’s not a thing, I think a big thing that makes me leave a gathering of people is a set end time. That’s the easiest out. If there’s not a set one, I’ll leave when it starts to get dark if the drive home is more than 20 minutes, just so there’s less of a chance of me driving while tired. Also, if things just aren’t working out, which is why the above two reasons are so important!

Ben Griggs (@braxwolf): I need to get out there and buy the new suits for Odyssey in Elite: Dangerous. Might try and get that done at some point, and read up on any upgrades I might need before heading back out into the black.

I usually leave a crowd of people when he cake runs out!

Brianna Royce (@nbrianna, blog): Happily ensconced in Star Wars Galaxies Legends at the moment. Going to do a bit of crafter grinding this weekend and a ton more factory runs. We’re at that stage in the game where I think I sell more components to other crafters who value time more than money than actual end products.

When I’ve been at it so long my face hurts from smiling or when I am yawning so hard because of exhaustion that I feel like I’m seeming rude. Even if I don’t wanna go.

Chris Neal (@wolfyseyes, blog): Elite: Dangerous: Odyssey. That’s it. That’s the response.

I’m not really a party person/large gathering sort, so usually I just have that internal countdown timer for the times where I would be forced to go into a large gathering of people. The exception being a concert, because the musicians are enough of a distraction for me to ignore that ticking internal clock.

Eliot Lefebvre (@Eliot_Lefebvre, blog): I’ve got the hankering for some Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, I think. I might wind up playing a fair chunk of that. I couldn’t tell you exactly why, though.

Really, the impressive part is getting me out to a thing with lots of people. I tend to get nervous and weird in groups, I don’t do well with parties. But I try to stay at least long enough to make the drive there and back worthwhile.

Every Saturday, join the Massively OP community and staff for What Are You Playing, our roundup of what MMORPGs and other games we’re hoping to play this weekend (with a bonus question or two for our amusement). Tell us what you’re up to! Go off-topic! And don’t forget to have fun!

Relatively quiet weekend for gaming this week.

Finished off Mass Effect 1, in the Legendary Edition yesterday, and have played about two hours into Mass Effect 2. Whilst I am enjoying it a lot, I am in no rush to play through it, I think it will be one of those games I chip away at in between other things, as I still remember most of the story, so won’t forget where I am even if I don’t touch it for awhile.

Also been playing the Swords of Legend Online (SOLO) Beta test this weekend. I enjoy the action combat and love the idea that a class have two roles that you easily swap between outside of combat without the need to have different gear sets. Trying to decide what class to play when it actually launches, dps/healer combo intrigues me, and I never play healer in MMOs, so would be a change of pace. I don’t think its going to replace my main MMO, but could be a nice distraction over the summer.

Then there is the usual stuff that is coming up and I’ve not really thought about when to play them, but I’m expecting another summer without any travel, so will have plenty of time to play games. Biomutant comes out on Tuesday, so will have a go at that, then there is Elder Scrolls Online‘s expansion for this year, but given how dull I found last year’s, I might just not bother with it. Then there is also PSO2 New Genesis at some point soon too, which will be a nice distraction.

When the year began, I thought it was going to be quite void of interesting things to play, but it seems there is plenty to play, they just lack the usual gross amount of hype the industry is known for these days.

Not much gaming had this week. I’ve been going through my Steam library and de-cluttering, picking games I can’t remember what they’re about, playing them and then deciding whether they are worth my time or not. With 300 + games, it’s a project.

A project that’s kept me from facing the inevitable. I went down a rabbit hole on my latest novel and it’s past time I faced up to it. I finally did and threw half of it out. That was a tough decision, since I was nearly finished. But nearly finished doesn’t cut it if the ending’s not there. Might as well be half finished when it can’t be finished. So now it’s half finished with a better chance of getting done.

Bonus question: What makes you leave a gathering? Well, that’s a rather presumptuous question, since it assumes I went to begin with.

GRRM has felt that pain for years; however he has the soothing power of piles of money…and experience.

Good Luck!

  • Last Cloudia – Continuing pirate theme event and completin stuff, nothing special.
  • Cookie Run: Kingdom – Advancing the special battle tower thing and still steadily completing content.
  • Princess Connect Re:Dive – The typical :) Normal dailies and Clan Battle.
  • Another Eden – Nothing special :) Dungeon grind while I try to get the time to livestream more story.
  • World of Warcraft: ‘Burning Crusade’ – Yeah I subbed. Yeah I’m still less than Lv 10.
  • Distancing Hangouts – More The Life and Suffering of Sir Brante on Discord with a couple friends. Finished Chapter 3, joined a secret society, got caught and now under restraint as a secret agent. Back to hometown, and starting adulthood. Did play some Deep Rock Galactic and sounds good.
  • Logins – Tales of Crestoria, Genshin Impact

Partner’s play of FFXII has him finished the Pharos Lighthouse and targeting any side stuff he feels like before the end!

Didn’t advance FFXV Pocket Edition, but its still on the list, promise.

Did actually play another gacha, Arc the Lad R, but that’s so casual that I forgot to count it last time.

Vaccine scheduled for late June, checking daily to see if it can be changed to early or mid June. Partner already got his first dose.

I want to leave the group when the real dumb ones take control.

Got Viscerafest, it’s pretty damn hard, but has potential.

Finished all episodes of Blood, including Cryptic Passage and Post Mortem on the 3rd (lightly broiled I think it’s called), instead of the 2nd, pink on the inside, this time. Great game but it’s no joke.

The 3 PvZ shooters of course!

Some rounds of Small World with friends via Steam version. Love the board game and the mobile/Steam implementation is quite good.

Have a great weekend!

Not much gaming, I told myself I’d make a Blood Elf with the new Burning Crusade Classic to relive my
twelve-year-old self, but despite logging in and glad to see the local severs were full, I couldn’t be bothered doing it, maybe I will later, maybe I won’t. I haven’t really been in the mood for much of
anything recently.

Personal Stuff

The assistant manager of the store where I work and someone who I considered a friend left for India a couple weeks ago going against the advice of both the Australian Government and Indian Embassy, so now he’s stuck there and he won’t be able to return for at least a year or maybe two, so he’s effectively thrown away his job, his car, his home everything he has here because his parents pressured and bullied
him into returning home to be with them, which considering that means putting his actual life in danger with the COVID situation just boggles my mind that any parent would do that.

I’ll probably never see him again which is a strange feeling as it was so sudden that he’s gone, as he won’t be able to get back
into Australia for a very long time, our borders are remaining firmly and tightly shut from any outside travel, it’s hard enough for citizens to get back of which he is not.
Even stranger is I know that now I’m going to be asked at any moment by my boss to replace him and become the assistant manager myself, which I guess would be the first ever promotion I’ve ever gotten
but I’d feel weird taking it, but since she kicked the guy out of the WhatsApp group, I guess that’s official then with him gone.

And now it’s a cold 5AM Sunday, the AutoGas isn’t turning on and I’m wandering around in the dark at a temperature of 1 degree Celsius trying to bleed a frozen air-compressor wondering what I’m doing with
my life lol.

The small mercy is that Sunday early mornings are work are dead quiet unlike the weekdays, so that
gives me the chance to type here on using the work computer with my OneDrive account while doing the end of day computer paperwork and nobody knows what’s up lol. My boss while hard does let me get away with a lot of things so that keeps me going, able to play whatever trash music in the store I want.

I upgraded an old family computer to Linux, so that was something computery I did, was an old pre-built from like 2008 when I was like 13 we had and it kinda been sitting around for the last decade doing nothing, I hate E-Waste, so I decided to swap the drive, upgrade the RAM and then install Linux Lite on it to make it new again, it’s now faster than the much higher spec family PC that replaced it, nobody’s going to use it but at least it’s working again, I hate E-Waste so fricken much.

On the bright side they announced a Hatsune Miku Miku x My Little Pony official crossover (yes that’s real, look it up), so the community got excited and there’s already a million awesome fan works around.
I don’t really care much for Hatsune Miku or Vocaloid stuff, but seeing people get excited over this kind of stuff does brighten up my day, reminds me of how much it all meant to me. Well, it’s now 6AM and the early rough-as-guts blokes are starting to come in so I better get back to work lol.

I hope all of you are staying safe out there friends!

That sucks, I really can not fathom why somebody would want to go back to India unless they were walking into it from a position of having a lot of money. This sort of reminds me of a friend my wife and I have that finally came out of the closet while living in New York, had a decent relationship for awhile but decided to move back to rural Tennessee to be miserable because of his parents.

Trust me, money doesn’t help.

A lot of my co-workers are Indian and one explained to me a long time ago how family dynamics are entirely different there. He said that teenagers often don’t have jobs, that parents give them everything they need or want until they’re finished higher-education, but in return at that they from there on are dedicated to supporting and doing everything for their parents, so they’re for life in debt.
Now of course this can be taken with a grain of salt as the dude who told me was from a wealthy family who could do that, spent his earnings here gambling and if he lost he didn’t care as he said he’d ask his dad for money and quit the job because he was “bored”, I liked the guy but the fact he was studying here in Australia meant he came from privilege.

Yet I think there’s truth in there about how much parents mean and the guy who just left for India, leaving everything behind and leaving one of the few nation’s actually COVID-free into the fire I think had to do with him being the only son, so he felt a strong obligation.
I can’t help but respect it in a way, although I am scared for his life.

And while I hate our Prime Minister, I can sympathise that all this is a tricky situation for the government. After months of full hard lockdowns last year and responding to things straight away instead of waiting, we’re one of the few places that effectively eliminated COVID, so trying to bring back 6,000+ Australian citizens from India (many who went there after the pandemic started) is a moral shitshow from wanting to pull citizens out of the fire verses creating another wave here if it gets out from quarantine. Leaving those who aren’t citizens like my friend ZERO chance of getting back. It’s just depressing.

Theres something to be said for that though considering in the US you can’t rely on Social Security, if you don’t save enough in other retirement funds you’re fucked when you get old; at least in India it seems the family can provide that social safety net.

In theory in Australia the government is meant to be our safety net, providing a pension for those who need it and the federal government is responsible for Aged Care, nobody over 60/70 is meant to be allowed to be homeless as the government is *meant* to swoop in to provice care, but it doesn’t always help as many slip through the cracks regrettably.

I hope everything works out for both you and your friend. If your friend’s family has money, at least he should be able to safely lock down.
And yeah, I am curious to see what a Hatsune Miku/MLP crossover looks like!

It has a statue coming from Japan, apparently Hatsune Miku has done other franchise cross-overs recently, but I’m not sure if it’s just merch or if there’s also music etc.

Unlocking a raid from Stormblood to unlock Bozjan Front, it took me few days to find out how to unlock Bozjan, most guides don’t mention this, they assume the player unlocked the old raid, only in a Reddit comment i found that i need to unlock the raid first.

The raid itself … i try to watch video guides for the fights, but there is so much info in 12 minutes videos that i forgot most of it when i finally find a raid group, not a big problem, i just prefer to experience the fights to learn, making mistakes is the fastest way to learn.

Bonus: it’s been a long time since i went to any gathering, since 2001 i think, when i feel tired i just quit and go home.

I messed around in Wolcen a little bit, can’t tell whether I was too drunk to play adequately or melee sucks at low levels, or my build just sucks but it got annoying dying and having to wade through a bunch of trash I already killed so I shut it down.

I downloaded EQ2 got to the character select screen and decided my god this is too ugly to even go through character creation, granted the first character that showed up on my screen was a low level Ogre but it’s so dated I felt like I was looking at an unmodded version of Morrowind.

So I’ve got a man cave night tonight so I’ll either play ESO which inevitably leads me to farming in Arteum out of habit. Or maybe I’ll fire up Diablo 3.

Just finished Jonathan Hickman’s Avengers run in Secret Wars so now I’m going to read through the X Men reboot since everything should be up on Marvel Unlimited through X of Swords, hoping the King in Black cross over is fully released since there’s cross overs in that one as well.

All the Overwatch talk got me hankering to play it. I managed to push forward past any worries and had a bunch of fun in Quick Play playing support. I have no interest in listening to random people on mic so I have that all muted. It works since I have no interest in any kind of ranked gameplay either.

I love the gameplay. It’s something I’d love to have in an MMO along with its beautiful art style. I hope the PvE mode coming in Overwatch 2 scratches some of that itch.

I’m going strong with Final Fantasy XIV. The story has been decent so far. I’d enjoy it more if it weren’t frequently peppered with group instance roadblocks that interrupt the whole flow of gameplay. So much waiting around. At least it’s seemingly easy group content with players who range from friendly to not minding me being new while carrying me at a breakneck pace.

Bonus Question: Stress.

Have a lovely weekend all!
