WRUP: New compound instruments edition

The Guitar Hero rush hit us all.

Guitarlophone: How many times have you played an electric guitar and just been stymied by how much the stupid thing isn’t a xylophone, too? Now you don’t have to worry about it! See, the xylophone is just swinging from the bottom of the guitar, so you can play it with your knees! As a bonus, you will look like you are doing some sort of weird shimmying dance.

Doubl-cello: Basically you take a cello and attach another cello to it. Why would you do this? I have no idea. But then you’d have two cellos at once.

Claridrum: Imagine a clarinet, but a bunch of them, and you play them all by hitting a thing really hard, and… wait, this is basically just how bagpipes work, isn’t it? Gosh, I like bagpipes. You know, a lot of people don’t like bagpipes, but have you ever tried to play those things? They’re really difficult! I know it might look like someone’s just holding a bag and making strong noises but it’s actually really complicated. One year I attended a workshop about the bagpipes and I had a chance to play them, and I found out after a bit of blowing on them that (continued on page seven of What Are You Playing)

Bonus question: What’s your favorite sport or sport-related activity to play? (No, esports don’t count for this.)

Andrew Ross (@dengarsw): Man, so much to do in Monster Hunter Rise again! I’ll also have to do some Pokemon Go since distance trading will be active, and hopefully I’ll have some time for New Pokemon Snap.

Man, I love the beach, so swimming for me. I actually liked weightlifting too, but an accident messed up my knees, so swimming would be really good for me now. Hmm, maybe I’ll have to hit the beach at some point when things calm down.

Andy McAdams: The World of Warcraft content lull has finally gotten to me, so I’ll probably login to pal around and maybe run some dungeons with people. I also just purchased Mass Effect Legendary Edition (I resisted for like a whole week!). I didn’t actually play through the games when they were new so I’m really excited to play through them now. I played all three Dragon Age games back to back a while back and had a great time.

I love running, though I’m not sure if that counts as a sport? Also practicing martial arts – after 8.5 years of training I finally got Shodan during COVID.

Brianna Royce (@nbrianna, blog): Definitely some Star Wars Galaxies Legends, but I’m thinking about giving the new Restoration III server a spin too. I’m thinking about a spice-dealing teras kasi creature handler… hmm….

Volleyball and tennis for me!

Chris Neal (@wolfyseyes, blog): Let’s see… I still have missions to run around and attempt in Elite Dangerous, I’ve managed to take down the Chronovore a couple of times in Dauntless so I want to attempt that some more, the new DLC for Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries is out so I feel like some time in a big chonky robot is called for, and I’ve also picked up the Mass Effect Legendary Edition so I can nibble all three of those when I have the urge to. I have options.

I used to play a lot of football (er, soccer) growing up as a kid. Also, I did a lot of street skating. As one can imagine, both of those activities have fallen to the wayside as I’ve aged.

Eliot Lefebvre (@Eliot_Lefebvre, blog): Well, it was a patch week for Final Fantasy XIV, so the lion’s share of my attention will be going to that and another project for review. That’ll pretty well fill up my weekend!

When I was younger, I really enjoyed anything in which I got to be a goalie or basketball, and I was pretty good at both. Now that I’m older, hiking is more my thing.

Sam Kash (@thesamkash): I’ve got some serious board game time planned with my gaming group. It should be fun. Also this weekend we have the Chivalry 2 open beta going. I never played the original one, but it looks interesting. I’ve also been playing Leafling. It is kind of fun in it’s retro styling.

I don’t do a whole lot in the sports department. I suppose I enjoy kicking a soccer ball around once in a while though.

Tyler Edwards (blog): This weekend is all about Iron Harvest for me. I’ll also try to find time for D&D and possibly some Magic: Legends, but my focus will be on raining indiscriminate freedom down upon the forces of Saxonia.

Bonus question: I used to do archery, if that counts?

Every Saturday, join the Massively OP community and staff for What Are You Playing, our roundup of what MMORPGs and other games we’re hoping to play this weekend (with a bonus question or two for our amusement). Tell us what you’re up to! Go off-topic! And don’t forget to have fun!
