The Daily Grind: What makes you irrationally angry in an MMO?

Leet.

Look, we all get mad about stuff sometimes. It’s understandable. It’s totally reasonable to be annoyed, for example, if the game you want to play is unavailable because of emergency server maintenance or it’s unplayable due to lag or something similar. Being angry in those situations is reasonable. But we also know that sometimes our anger is disproportionate compared to the actual irritation, and we wind up getting really angry about something that’s outside of our control or otherwise just an unfortunate reality rather than something we could avoid.

Heck, it can even be a matter of the aforementioned problems. Sure, it sucks when you want to play a game and can’t because of server maintenance, but it’s possible to get far too worked up and angry about it, sometimes even when you intellectually know that it’s taking your anger way too far. It happens to all of us. So what makes you irrationally angry in an MMO? What just has you seeing red, even if you can more objectively note that it’s a fairly minor thing to get worked up over?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Bots. I’ll quit an MMO on the spot if I see bots running around doing what I’m doing.

To be clear I don’t think my bottomless hatred for the RNG in Warframe is in any way irrational.

I wish I could help. I’ve gotten to the point where I don’t really even notice it. Which is weird, because the way I deal with new Warframe releases means I put myself through it at least twice. I have enough platinum stockpiled now to just buy a new Warframe bundle on the rare occasions they release one. Then I’ll grind the blueprints and components for a Warframe to feed to Helminth (because I’m not spending money to do that.) Then I’ll do it *again* so I can build a second copy if I want to try a build that’s too different than the super generic one I normally use on everything.

But then, I’m also never in a hurry for any of it, and I’ve played for so long that the *only* thing I really need to worry about are the Warframe components. I’ve got millions of some of the resources. And somehow, I’ve managed to avoid getting totally hosed by the RNG on some specific things. There’s a piece that drops from Profit Taker… gravimag components? Anyway, multiples are required to turn in to get max rank with some of the Solaris factions. I got “enough” in a month or two. There’s people on the forums who say they’ve been fighting her every day since she was released and never gotten them. :( If that’s true, that’s a serious problem, nothing should be THAT rare. :(

I’ve broken down and just bought things with platinum, but resent having to do so.

Perhaps my ire comes from the idea that getting the same “common” component multiple times in a row despite upgrading relics seems more spite-based vs. random.

Oooooh. Relics. Yeah, basically no one likes that system.

When games put the main storyline behind team-only content. Nothing says immersion like the following:

“Hi, I’ve never done this before and I just want to finish it once to see the story.”
“*(%*ing noob.” You have been kicked.

“Hi, I’ve never done this before and I just want to finish it once to see the story.”
“Sure, hope you like it.”
Literally 30 seconds later, same other player.
“Spacebar! Spacebar! Spacebar spacebar spacebar spacbarspacebarspacebarspacebar! Goddamnit who isn’t hitting spacebar!”

Or my personal favorite, in SWTOR – a team that’s mostly playing one side or the other of the story (mostly Lightside, mostly Darkside) except one player, with an obnoxious name and an outfit that looks like a thrift store threw up. Who waits till everyone else has picked so they can do the opposite. Bonus points because they usually have a name that “almost but ever so slightly not quite” breaks the profanity filter rules.

Handholding and being railroaded ..
well angry is a strong word, I would say annoyed.

Lack of player trading. Flavor of the month classes changed after all the whale spending starts to lag. Basically BDO.

Under-aged appearing races. Period, that sets me off, and generally I leave the game poste-haste. There ain’t no recovering or ‘explaining’ it away, it’s a full-stop “I’m outta here” moment.

People jumping around, or doing other immersion breaking things, so it’s impossible to just ignore them and pretend they’re just scenery NPCs. Lol.

Haha yeah jumpers really get under my skin.

My anger in MMOs is always very well rationalized thank you, perhaps “unreasonably angry” is the phrase the OP should have used. :)

Disproportionately angry?

Double RNG

FFXIV just added one with their field notes system in Bozjan Front/Zadnor instances. Not only do you have to wait up to an hour or longer for a certain engagement to spawn, through event queuing , killing certain mobs and hoping noone else is trying to spawn something drop while also hoping others are clearing the event queue, the drop rate is incredibly low.

Either give me a guaranteed drop or let me grind.

That feeling when the item you want is a rare drop, from a rare spawn, *and* the rare drop is shared between four or five possible choices. (IE, if it rolls a chance at a “rare,” there are four different “rare” items it can be.) And every time you do get the rare drop from the rare spawn, it’s one of the pieces you already have, and not the ONE you need to finish it. :(
