The Daily Grind: What sort of monster do you love to kill in an MMO?

Vengeance.

We’ve made jokes before about how MMORPGs have certain predictable elements in their bestiaries. After all, most games feature the really cute thing (or things) you’d prefer not to fight, the legless blob, the dragon thing, and so forth. But there’s also always one sort of enemy you love to kill. Whether it’s due to constant irritation from fighting the enemy type, lore that indicates something making this enemy particularly noxious, or just personal quirks you can’t explain, there is always something that always brings you joy to hunt down and pop whenever needed.

Heck, sometimes it’s just down to a vendetta; after having plenty of opportunities to be afraid of Goblins in Final Fantasy XI, I always took particular bliss in making sure that a given goblin fell on my own weaponry. So what sort of monster do you love to kill in an MMO? What particular enemies are you just always happy to take out, even if you recognize it’s kind of silly?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

cancelscanners.

this golin subrace has developed their natural greed into a symbiosis with a gaming chair (and some empty plastic bottles), their exclusive obligation is to dominate any market by constantly reposting their sortiment.
driven by the tremendous effort of their singular purpose, cancelscanners r solitary creatures. Sometimes, esp. during mating season, they gather on r/WoW-economy to brag and mislead (ad)venturers with their shemes in the name of their god: g(old)p(er)h(our).

the singular measure to purge their ill-fated destiny is to crash the infected markets below production cost. but beware, only the most wealthy will suceed.

to me the best “early” foe in any MMO is an animated skeleton.

Dragons, they are quintessentially classic and always give satisfaction when fighting and beating.

Slavers in any game I go after hard.

To this day the mobs I enjoyed kicking the crap out of most in any MMO I’ve ever played was the original version of the “5th column” villain group in City of heroes; (and I’m talking the version with the German ranks and names).

For me there was nothing more satisfying than kicking the shit out of a bunch of Nazis.

Aside from WoW and pvp situations, what MMO games let you kill elves?

Since my earliest introduction to warhammer, I’ve loved the endless hatred between orcs and dwarves. I don’t mind which side of the conflict I’m on, but whenever I get to play either a dwarf or an orc I take great pleasure in trying to wipe out the other side!

Slavers in EVE. One of my favorite missions against them features dialogue to the effect that I have a license to kill and no prisoners are expected…
