The Daily Grind: What is the most annoying MMO music track in existence?

It has a sense of humor!

As a fan of MMO music, I’m always in tune (har!) with how particular tracks can add or detract from certain zones and cities. A great piece makes you feel at home, excited, or invigorated, while a bad track… well, we don’t like the bad tracks.

But those are the ones I want us to talk about today! I want us to unlock those secret vaults in our minds where we repress the truly terrible things so that we can haul out those painful MMO music samples. I’m not merely talking about ones that aren’t good; I speak of the tracks that, if they took physical form, you would have beaten to death with a lead pipe because they irk you so much.

What’s the most annoying MMO music track in existence? Bonus points if you link to it in the comments!

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

The “new” (since Cata?) Stormwind music with the brass section that blasts my speakers out of nowhere. I have to have the music turned on off in Stormwind.

All city music should be chill vibes, in my opinion.

There’s a song in Heavensward that sounds like it has bagpipes. I initially liked that song. However, it plays in several places where it doesn’t fit the tone of the area or what’s happening and feels completely out of place. That dissonance was so off-putting that I can’t stand that bgm anymore, and I’ll turn the music off whenever it plays.

I can also see the theme for Labyrinthos getting old very quickly in Endwalker.

I did eventually turn off mount music in FFXIV just due to the start and stopping of the music and it can get old fast when jumping on a mount every minute or so.

I find the song A New Hope that plays in Uldah to be so annoying just due to the amount of time I spend in that city and also my distain for desert environments in games.

On the flip side the mount music for the magitek armor is 100% amazing as it is the opening theme for FF6.

There’s a specific track that plays in space areas in Star Trek Online. I can *NOT* seem to find an example of it online. It is discordant, jarring, and doesn’t seem to fit with any other music in the game at ALL. To me it sounds like a damaged music box being crushed, something that would fit more closely into something like “American McGee’s Alice” games. That one track is pretty much the reason I have disabled the in-game music.

I hear that track, and think to myself “I do not like this music.”

I can’t remember one, i can listen to any music but non-stop music ruins any good track, in most MMOs i turn the music off from time to time, this happened a lot in FFXIV.

I think I’d like it more if it hadn’t played so often. I heard it too many times while just idling around at the Inn

Return to Karazhan – Opera Hall

It’s not bad at first, but after 10th and 100th time it becomes a monstrosity in your mind.

That was actually the only song I remember from WoW’s generic OST.

Ummm .. I love that tune! But I didn’t spend enough time in Kara to grow sick of it.

There’s a DDO ambient music track that plays in a lot of the jungle areas. It’s little more than muted drum sounds with some unsettling (but again very muted) synth. After half an hour or so it becomes absolutely unbearable.
