One Shots: Fight for your right to party

32

When a Star Wars: The Old Republic player wants to party — and with an expansion on the way, it’s as good an excuse as any, you’re going to want to head to a planet where giant space slugs operate garish casinos floating in mid-air.

That’s where you’ll find Minimalistway at any rate: “Nar Shaddaa always makes me happy, time for some gambling!”

“The other main thing I’ve been doing this past week is having a blast on Corsair in Black Desert, “Bereman99 said. “I’ve always had a soft spot for the pirate/buccaneer and age of sail aesthetic, and it’s a class that fits that bill perfectly. That it also has a pretty mermaid form is just icing on the seafaring cake.”

Lucky Jinx did some on-the-ground reporting from New Jersey, er, World of Warcraft’s Korthia, the latest area to be added to the game. And like New Jersey, its “garden state” vistas are brilliant to behold.

Elder Scrolls Online does world building really well with a diverse and pretty world to explore,” BalsBigBrother posted. “Sometimes you find yourself in a mysterious cave the only promises on offer here being danger and death. You push forward regardless because this is what you do and this is where legends are made.”

Cue power ballad.

And we will close out our featured selections with this tasteful yet moving diorama from Greaterdivinity, who says, “I’m quite enjoying discovering all the delightful little touches from the Bethesda team in Fallout 76. They have a thing for teddy bears being put in awkward situations, like this poor guy left to plunge a port-o-potty deep in a mine for eternity. At least he’s got a helping hand. I’ll see myself out now.”

Are you a bad enough dude to rescue the president and post a screenshot or two on the side? Get cracking and rack up those One Shots points to get the high score for next week’s leaderboards!*

*leaderboard feature coming soon

Every week, One Shots shines a spotlight on the best community screenshots from your MMO adventures. If you have a great pic to share, email it to justin@massivelyop.com with the subject “One Shots.” Make sure that the picture is over 880px wide and comes with a description or story!

I am curious, why are you going to present Leader Boards, doesn’t that go against the spirit of what you wanted for this column Justin?

” There’s no bias or preference for certain people or games going on here. My process is that when Friday rolls around, I pull up all of the submissions from the past week and simply do a gut check of which pictures stand out the most — the most beautiful, the most interesting, or the ones from games we don’t see as often. I do try to spread the love around by featuring as many people as I can.

But I don’t give any preference to submissions that go into the challenge versus ones that are simply shared. The challenge is just a prompt if people want one, not a guarantee that I’m going to pick your picture.

And it’s never to say that the ones I don’t pick are horrible! Often there are more great entries than the five I choose every week. If nothing else, they’ll always exist in the comments for people to admire.”

I’m just not sure how that can translate into a Leader Board if we’re just going by Gut Checks, and pictures that may or may not even follow any challenge rules; I’m just saying Leader Boards implies a level of competition, competitions require some kind of rules and qualitative data as opposed to quantitative, objective vs subjective.

I’m fairly sure that’s a joke.

Guess that went right over my head then.

Reader

It was literally the most obvious of jokes. Likely directed at you since you troll the column every week.

Reader
SmiteDoctor

The only time I actually trolled was when I put the Stick figure up, I actually put a lot of care and consideration into my submissions. Last week I focused on the drudgery of common live and the working poor, this week I focused on prostitution, next week I’ll be focusing on crime.

I’m on a underbelly theme at the moment, I’ve been reading Charles Bukowski poetry, and listening to Tom Waits.

It’s good to put care and consideration in your stuff, but none of it makes your stuff pickable or not. It’s Justin’s criteria.

When you’re fighting such useless fights ( because it really doesn’t matter ) to the point where you get trolled by the columnist, maybe take a step back to see if you’re not giving way more importance than it actually has.

Okay, so… since you don’t seem to understand that constantly complaining about the fact that your screenshots don’t get picked is actually bad for you and only causes more drama, let’s take another tack.

Brutal honesty.

You have some shots that turn out really good, but the lack of consistency indicates an accidental ‘good’ and not practiced talent. Most of the time, it’s the composition that fails. It has nothing to do with playing a ‘bland’ game. If you’d genuinely like help in that regard, we’d all be happy to provide tips, but this is not the way to go about it.

You talk about 2 hours of research and the like to get these pictures. That’s great, you’re on the right track, but the pictures I post are 3 or 5 that I may have gleaned from 20-30 hours of gameplay. At least. And that doesn’t include the hundreds (literal hundreds) of shots that didn’t make the cut.

I also submit pictures that are specifically to Justin’s taste. I can guess, with about 80% certainty, which of my shots Justin is going to pick. I just know what he likes after 3 years of submitting shots here.

But as he said before, he often just picks what catches his eye. Not every shot that makes it into the column is great art. It might be funny. It might be quirky. Who knows what lurks in the mind of the Bard Olivetti?

That doesn’t mean you need to conform your art to Justin’s needs. That’s not the point of this column. The point is to share things you like. If your art needs validation from Justin, then as Bruno said, you might need to step back and evaluate why you’re doing this.

Do you photoshop your screen shots, use filters? I think my Radeon Software has something for screenshots.

So how do you get some of your shots, is there something automatically taking screen shots in the background that you can parse through later to edit?

Reader
SmiteDoctor

Some times comments can be all about appearances too perhaps.

Here’s to your good appearance.

Pigtailed Pro Tip: If you want to get your screens featured in this column, this is most certainly not the way to go about it. If you are looking to have your posts get cut on the moderation block, by all means keep this up. Hope this helps!

Ken Burns presents, the Oldest Profession in Tamriel from Elder Scrolls Online.

Screen Shot Series 1 is a Dominatrix in the Basement of the Ebony Flask in the locale of Ebonheart in Stonefalls.

Screen Shot Series 2 is an Independent Contractor out of the Baandari Trading Post in Malabal Tor.

Screen Shot Series 3 is in the Sugar Bowl of Rimmen located in Northern Elsweyr.

Screen Shot Series 4 can be found in Ufgel’s Bath House (in the basement of his legitimate front Ufgel’s Laundry), located in Orsinium of Wrothgar.

Screen Shot 5 is of a Madam that appears to have a whole small district dedicated to prostitution on the outskirts of Pa’alat in Reapers March.

PS

Please take into consideration that when I bother presenting anything for submission I put a lot of care into scouting and researching locales, as well as a lot of time taking screen shots attempting to get decent poses.

For this effort I spent about 2 hours between research, photography, and travel.

PSS

Lat week took me over an hour as well to research and put together an appropriate theme for my series of shots, I don’t just take screen shots because they are pretty I am now trying to get a cross section depicting areas of day to day life and culture from the common folk of Tamriel.

More like troublesome posts. /shrug

Reader

What’s so troublesome about it, theres a common theme regarding a widespread aspect of multiple cultures in Tamriel, I provided a broad cross section of locations that cover everything from the core game to other DLCs. I dont think I get enough credit here for the amount of research, and time scouting locations, plus it’s a bit time consuming to get shots that dont look like trash either.

I just dont understand why people think I’m trolling here if I’m putting this much thought and effort into transcending putting up pretty pictures; its kind of insulting really.

It’s called ART

Reader
Bruno Brito

its kind of insulting really.

I mean. You keep making these weird cases every week on One shot. That makes people pretty touchy about supporting your stuff. You posted too many pictures too.

You kinda made that bed. Try to chill about it next week and just show your stuff without all this baggage tied to it. It’ll flow way better.

@Mr. Bruno:

It’s not that this person posts too many pictures. The more the merrier as far as I am concerned. Rather the narrative seems to be directed at the author of this column in spite, puts a real bad taste in reader’s and contributor’s mouths. You know, it becomes toxic and nobody wants to touch that poison. And the kicker, if this was without that baggage, the pic presentation would of been a hoot.

Also see: The way Mr. Oleg trolls the Camerlot Unchained based articles using similar tactics against the game’s author.

In-game camera mode with filters? Add SOLO to the list that has that as an option.

A neat little additional feature that they offer is the ability to use filters that adjust depth of field, color (hue, saturation, etc), glare, and vignette amount – the way programs like Reshade or G-Shade do – but all within the game itself, no external programs needed. Useful for not only screenshots, but if you want the overall look of the game to be different, SOLO has you covered.

Oh, and I just figured out how to switch the camera controls so that I can change its placement. So here’s another “oil painting” lol.

Meant to add this to the previous post but was too quick on the click. A bit of “spot the player” going on here – moving the camera alone apparently has quite the range.

DDO does not screenshot well, however I’ve just achieved peak purple and wanted to share. Sparkly purple shadowblades, sparkly purply armour and a sparkly purple cat, who doesn’t pose for photos.

I’ve now achieved such an intense level of purpleness (purplosity?) that purple crystals randomly burst out of the ground wherever I go.
