WRUP: Who’s happy eating today edition

Not this.

Kyle is doing the happy eat now with mashing mouth parts against the food slough, very many happy to be enjoying chew! Kyle make happy noise and indicate a desire more for slough is to be eating! Kyle wins at eat.

Frankie make the chew-chew tooth move and does the best happy now time with eat, say, “Having food is best of time to eat” and “Please ignore my family, they think I was taken here against my will but I’m actually very comfortable.” We do not lie. We do not lie. We do not lie.

No food time for Ian again.

Mindy make the eat. Mindy make the eat! Mindy do a big make eat and we are happy that she do. Praise Mindy. Mindy is life and joy. Mindy knows all.

What ARe You Playing

Bonus question: What song would you be very happy to never hear again?

Brianna Royce (@nbrianna, blog): I’m still in New World, but I wanna dip into Guild Wars 2 a little bit with my kids, and I still need to get to Book of Travels since it was having nasty server issues when I tried earlier this week.

The Final Countdown, Benny and the Jets, and thanks to a particularly obnoxious neighbor back when I lived in New Mexico, One of These Nights. Dear god please make it stop.

Chris Neal (@wolfyseyes, blog): Primarily New World as I firm up my kit with goodies from the faction store and rep Team Grape Soda at the same time, but I also think I’ll be doing some spaceship things in Elite Dangerous.

Pretty much everything Paul McCartney and Wings did, but if I had to single out one song of theirs, it’d be Band on the Run. Everything about that song blows. It’s like Paul wanted to try his hand at prog rock but wrote that tune while being sleepy. It’s so uninspired and boring and obnoxious.

Eliot Lefebvre (@Eliot_Lefebvre, blog): Some review stuff being done this weekend that I can’t talk about, plus a bit of Final Fantasy XIV when I find the time. Not too much, though, I’m going to have to farm starting with the moogle event next week.

I agree with the Dude. (Warning: cussin’.)

Sam Kash (@thesamkash): We’re still rocking our way slowly leveling up in New World. It’s just a solid good experience for me. I’m also making time to get my Guild Wars 2 Halloween dailies done as well. I think they added a few new achievements but I haven’t looked too deeply at them yet.

Bonus: I don’t know if there is a particular song I don’t want to hear. I’m a straight hater. I could do without ever hearing anything by Billie Ellish. Whatever those combinations of sounds should actually be called, I’m not sure. They aren’t music and I certainly wouldn’t call them songs.

Tyler Edwards (blog): New World and D&D, as is my wont.

Bonus question: I tend to have strong feelings on music, so it’s pretty hard to narrow it down. Lots of whole bands – maybe even a few genres – I’d happily ban. But thinking it over, for a single song, what stands out the most is Take Me to Church by Hozier. I know little about Hozier as a person, but based on his music I cannot escape the feeling that he has a profoundly high opinion of himself.

Every Saturday, join the Massively OP community and staff for What Are You Playing, our roundup of what MMORPGs and other games we’re hoping to play this weekend (with a bonus question or two for our amusement). Tell us what you’re up to! Go off-topic! And don’t forget to have fun!

Just started Mass Effect 3 after having done a run straight through 1 and 2 with the legendary edition. In 4k, on the couch, with all the DLC and with all your choices from the previous games taking effect, it’s just a masterpiece.

Music. Hmm. Lots of Christmas number ones I’d happily consign to the void. Besides, that a few particularly obnoxious ones from the far distant past – The Chicken Song and In the Summertime spring to mind.

Hey folks,
I’ve been away for a couple weeks, been a busy bee for good and bad reasons. Good Reason: Finally got my second shot so I’m fully vaccinated, I’m the last member of my family to be vaxxed due to being low on the rollout priority but glad to finally have it. And just in good time as well because…

Bad Reason: My brother became a primary contact at a declared tier-1 covid site for the disability center he attends, so I ended up taking up all the family roles outside of the home as both my parents were isolating for two weeks as well as him, thankfully he didn’t have covid in the end, fun fun. Knocked me out for a couple of weeks, but is the closest thing I got to taking even a couple days off work, not waking up at 4:30am every morning was a welcome change even if because of unfortunate reasons.

Good Reason: Been busy video editing in the meantime so no time for games or anything really, the group I’m with is applying for tax-payer funding for a series they’re hoping to make, if they’re one of the lucky few who can get the funding or at least the funding they’re aiming for, that means that I’d be able to quit my terrible demoralizing retail job and do that instead! Although I’m trying not to get my hopes up too high as it’s very VERY competitive to get funding, but on our side is we’ve got some work under our belts now to prove that we’re capable of delivering.

So with all this yeah, no time for New World or any game, the nights when I was super tired, I pretty much just binged watched the old UK version of Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares lol, but had to do it through a channel catch-up app which meant I was watching ads for the first time in a long time, got real sick of the jingle “If you’re paying too much for power you’re a goose!” ugh.

That said, I did download The Sims 2, 3 & 4, trying that out again.
Since my state is soon hopefully coming out of lockdown for most folks that means now the whole COVID Certificate thing is really going to heat up, I’m praying that where I work doesn’t require asking folks for proof of vaccination, I think we’re because essential we don’t. Because asking folks to wear masks and use the QR sign-in in already a nightmare lol. Sends my anxiety through the roof and I’m real sick of angry dudes screaming in my face, I can’t imagine asking these blokes to show their proof of vaccination XD I really feel for hospitality workers.

Then there’s going to be the whole thing of which proof some might accept etc. My state has a unified QR check-in system and now you can link your proof to that so it’s all combined, it’s meant to be the more harder-to-fake one so I think that’ll be the standard.
Which I a shame because I rather like the Google Pay version. My understanding is only the USA & AUS have partnered with Google & Apple to use their payment systems as an alternative for covid proof. But the Google one is so easy to fake it’s not funny, like I’ll attach the top of it, it’s that plain with under it my name, the document number and date of vaccination etc. But because it’s a plain image with no QR on it then it’s going to be so easy to take into an editor and change so I reckon that despite it being what I like, it’s not going to be accepted a lot but that’s alright I can deal with other methods.
They’re going to have to make a national system at some point once interstate travel really opens up.

Stay safe folks.

I am giving Spyro Reignited Trilogy a go; 120% (and all achievements) on the first game already, now going through the second one.

Which, incidentally, means Epic actually managed to bug me despite my refusal to use their store. Apparently there’s leftover telemetry in the version of the Unreal engine that Spyro uses, which would already be bad, but it gets worse; some time ago Epic took down the telemetry servers, so when Spyro tries to connect to them it gets a network error — and that error causes the game to crash to desktop without even an error message. End result, I had to block a few domains owned by Epic in order for the game to stop randomly crashing to desktop, and wasted some of my weekend videogame time figuring that out.

Bonus: There isn’t really one. I mean, there’s a lot of songs I don’t exactly like, but I just don’t listen to them — which is made easier by the fact I don’t listen to radio and easily get a headache from loud music, so I naturally avoid most places and situations where annoying music might be playing. Also, I was lucky in that everyone I ever shared a house or apartment with had compatible musical tastes, so I was never bombarded with music I found jarring or irritating.

It’s gorgeous outside, so I’m going out to fly RC’s. This evening I may log some time in Valheim. We’re putting a roof on the new place.

Your bonus question triggers memories of childhood terror. “He’ll come again” by Dolly Parton. He was the monster under the bed, and that piano was him stalking me. One of my mom’s favorite songs, and to this day it gives me the creeps. And now it’s stuck in my head.

and here I go…

I’m playing Neverwinter, leveling up a Cleric and should get level 20 today or tomorrow. I also downloaded Scarlet Nexus and might try that, it looks very good although I am not an anime or JRPG fan typically. For gaming that’s what I have planned and on the go for now.

Bonus question: Not gonna do it :)

I wish you well, I wish you freedom, happy gaming whoever reads this.

I need two more challenges to hit 24 for this PoE league, so getting that is top priority. There a couple I can get pretty easily that are just a bit grindy and several others that I could get with a single lucky drop, so shouldn’t take too long.
Then it may be time to step into New World and see if it can grab me. And then there’s Battletech to scratch the strategy itch. I don’t know why it took me so long to start playing it since it’s the game I been wanting for a long time.

Bonus: There’s a hole with no bottom. But if I have to pick just one the clear winner is ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ by Sinéad O’Connor. I didn’t like it to begin with and it got an absolutely insane amount of overplay when it was popular. I was driving along listening to the radio when it came on the station I was listening to. So I immediately switched to another preset and it was also playing on that station. AND on the third preset. I am not making that up. Luckily the other three presets were stations that would never play it so I was able to find shelter.

Benny and the Jets

I like almost everything by Elton John. It’s that exact song that requires I use the “almost” modifier.

…U know, I never heard of Prince’s version that song…since he’s the one who wrote it I believe.

But sometimes the hate on maybe for the artist who sang it. So this song does come with an option of switching her out for the original artist. Perhaps it wont be least as offensive. o.O

This week: Where I ask you the readers about Black Desert Online.

…because the journey of weaning the pigtails off of World of Warcraft is fraught with looking for alternatives. This game has come to mind before, but I had 3 other MMO’s I was invested in at the time including WoW…so I put my interests of it on the back burner till now’ish.

I understand like all games, it’s it’s own unique (and not so unique) issues that border on game killing for me…such as gender locked classes, intrusive cash shop, pop-in environments and unhealthy obsessions for PvP. But that hasn’t stopped me from playing other games before including WoW. So I want to experience it and taste it…perhaps over 3 month BalsBigBrother period. So any feedback on those who played this game honestly and knowledgeable would be appreciated. Pigtail thanks in advance!

Also…is it a B2P with a sub option? Or something else. I’m pretty sure it’s not run on NFT’s though. o.O

Also this week: In the meantime, I still slugging my way through Lyn & Soul.

Bonus Answer: Pretty much anything by Air Supply. :(

Have a great week and weekend folks. And as always, please stay safe and get vaccinated! /bows

I have played some BDO, my opinion is it’s verrry grindy and it’s clearly how the game was designed. My Mystic at level 57 grinding mobs for say maybe an hour was getting maybe around 2% exp bar increase YMMV of course and no doubt there are people who know how to level faster, but there’s that as an example. You can set up your character to use a training dummie and raise skills and gain exp when you are not actually playing and it’s just a part of the game, not considered cheating like say macroing was in UO. The crafting or Life Skills/economy is very in depth, if that’s something you like BDO might be for you, you can also do many life skill things while you are afk. The questing is quite good but BDO is not really a theme park MMO so it’s not at all the main aspect of it, also there’s only one dungeon in the game and it’s an end game thing. Combat very fun, Lahn and Mystic are two classes I played most and very much enjoyed simply fighting mobs just for loot and exp which as far as the PvE side is pretty much all there is to it except previously mentioned questing. PvP, I didn’t do any and never once was attacked by another player, you are PvP free till I think level 50 but I think I just didn’t get to the areas or whatever where people do that. I really enjoyed BDO but hit a wall of grindyness and lack of PvE variety. Hope that helps.

It is usually on sale for around 5 bucks. It is worth that and trying it is the only way you will really know. No subbing

BDO has some features that are not seen much elsewhere – horse breeding and training, obtaining wagons to transport goods from town to town, breeding pets, hiring and dispatching workers, allowing multiple houses in each city and using them for different purposes, managing an investment in geographical layout of nodes to assist in what your current objectives are, etc.

It’s deep and detailed in many regards outside of combat and also a grindfest as Damon reflects below on the usual PVE aspect. Grind spots are competitive and PVP will sometimes occur as a means to claim/takeover a spot.

At level 50 (I think I member right) you stop leveling, but get an item that allows you to keep leveling – red pill. Once you take it you are able to be attacked in open areas – amount of jerks in your area may vary. Sometimes there are seasonal servers with no PVP at all though which have bonuses and everything is transferred a regular server at the end.

BDO is great, but can be overwhelming and I would not recommend it as someone’s 1st entry into MMOs. The cash shop and auction house pricing controls can be frustrating. If this was a sub game and/or cosmetic F2P without forced PVP I think it would be much more popular. The mobile version (no entry fee), which I played on PC via Bluestacks, is less busy/complicated.

Thank you all for taking the time to answer my question about BDO. It’s really appreciated and I feel more informed.

My only question remains is there a fan based info site for this game, like a version WoWhead or something? That will least help navigate me through the n00bsauce pickles I find myself in when enter new MMO territory.

…also a suggested MOP base server would be appreciated too!

Thanks again. /bows

I always used blackdesertfoundry.com/list-of-guides/ for the start of my guidance, but I have not played for a long time. Paying a visit there it looks like there is currently a season underway -see banner at the top of page.

Servers are different than most games -I hope this is not out of date, but….they are like channels and you can jump between them every 15min or so.

I would start on either the Seasonal ones (free stuff and bonuses) or there are usually a few for new players with exp boost and no pvp that you can play on for 30 days. They used to be the Olivia branded ones, but I am sure there is some notage somewhere with a mouse over or something.

Have fun in the character creator!

Fallout 76: I had a long talk with myself, “You’ve got to stop accidentally destroying your camps.” I felt it was needed after destroying my 2nd camp in three weeks… accidentally. After mulling over the I Ain’t got a C.A.M.P. blues, I got to work and rebuilt it. Again. BUT. I learned to rename and make the icons different. Hopefully I don’t do this again!

Been revisiting some older games lately. Mainly Red Alert Remastered. I miss playing simple strategy games. Nowadays everything has to have complex mechanics and myriad of resources to manage.

Other than that, getting my feet wet in Book of Travels, as well as trying to find more time to progress in New World.
