Betawatch: Elyon leaves beta for launch

Elyon slipped the surly tides of beta this week by leaping into a rather subdued launch, but a respectable one: Ahead of the weekend, it’s already seen a peak of nearly 14,000 concurrent players. Meanwhile in the world of MMO testing…

  • The Cycle extended its closed beta all the way to November 8th to compensate players for technical issues.
  • Fractured closed its fall alpha but opened up a survey for participants; hopefully, it isn’t trolled like the alpha itself was.
  • Genfanad is planning a one-day test event… on Halloween.
  • Ravendawn is eyeing its third alpha.
  • Aaaaand Lost Ark is planning its next closed beta for November 4th.

Here’s the rest of our Betawatch list for the week.

As always, we consider an MMO to be in open testing if it features free, public signups and will server wipe prior to launch. An MMO is marked in closed testing if it’s running a private test phase that cannot freely be accessed by the general public; it’s usually under NDA as well. Early access and crowdfunded MMOs whose tests we deem legitimate will be included. So-called “open beta” soft-launch MMOs with cash shops, no sign of launch in the west, or limited interest for our readers will not be listed; we also do not list expansions, with occasional exceptions.

AdventureQuest 3D: Open beta

Yes, MMO gamers, you too can perform the unpaid quality-control work otherwise known as game testing! Check out Massively Overpowered’s Betawatch every week for a run-down of MMOs that are still on the road to launch, even if they appear to have set up a permanent residence in a shed called early access.

Haven’t played a new MMO in many years. Can’t even remember when I tried something new… Since it was free, downloaded Elyon and spent about two days creating and deleting characters across both servers, a faction each. Settled on a Vulpin Elf Mystic on Cassiopia. I nearly quit playing after the 3rd day due to how many QoL features are locked behind the cash shop, which I was aware of, but wanted to see if I could play around it.

Then I discovered Twitch drops! And the Alien free mount! So far I have a free pet (although there’s an issue with it, which Kakao is investigating), a free parrot mount, 8 slots of free inventory, and a free wing suit (not sure what that is yet). There is a free RNG box you can earn every day until Nov 8th, I think. Just running the Twitch window muted in the background.

Mostly, I just want to get to the housing and crafting part of the game to see what that’s all about.

I spend quite a bit of time in my house crafting and it’s fun. It tickles the ‘do lots of different things’ itch.

Though I’ve also got level 40, 36, and 33 characters so… I play a lot.

The rune system is actually bad, considering how the upgrade system works. With the gems being able to break you will constantly being fighting that system. So achieving enough skill points via gems will be a nightmare. Not to mention breakthrough gear actually being able to break and put you back at needing to farm the piece again. The game is meant to be a loooong grind, and unfortunately If I have to grind I’d much rather do it in BDO where the graphics are far better and the combat is again far better.

Elyon ya……

Stiff melee combat for some classes. Ranged flows well though.
Using systems from the dark ages of gaming. (Gear breaking and poofing on failure)
Sketchy cash shop items.
Graphics are not very good.
Forced PvP (personal negative)
Overly convoluted and annoying upgrade systems.

It’s like BDO and Tera had a love child, but the game came out not as good as either.

Personal take is it’s a terrible game. Just another Korean grinder with terrible systems.

ok, seems and it’s dated but the fun is here and it do the work while waiting for endwalker.
no need to put a single $$ in it (but i’ll do just for the hours i passed in for now).
and i really like all the side stuff you can do, the world event pop, arena minute etc.
give it a try, it’s really free, there’s some drop and code for free stuff too

Its so bad! (Elyon)

This, So much this. When you think way back to how this game was first promoted, the final results are shockingly bad for a game being released in 2021.

Would be iffy even for 2013.
