The Daily Grind: Is it time for a Wheel of Time MMORPG?

Last night, Amazon finally debuted its Wheel of Time TV series, based on Robert Jordan’s sprawling franchise of the same name that began back in 1990. And that makes today the perfect time to ask why the heck we still don’t have an MMO set in this world!

I’m cheating a tiny bit here because I actually asked a similar question exactly three years ago, when the adaptation was just getting underway and the buzz had just begun. At the time, I expressed reservations about some of the more cringe stuff in the books, the stuff that made me trail off reading them many years ago, even before Jordan died and the franchise passed to a new writer to finish up. But chatting with my guildies about the show all over again (one of them got to see the fan premiere earlier this week!) has reminded me just how fun it was as a kid to discuss all the theories as the books were coming out one by one. I really wouldn’t mind tugging a few braids in that world. In fact, I’ve kind of done it; years after I started playing MMOs, I actually played a Wheel of Time MUD for a bit, which I suppose isn’t the normal order for these things, but those were my only options – and still are.

Is it time for a Wheel of Time MMORPG? Would you play it?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

I’ve only seen two episodes. I’ve enjoyed it so far and hope it keeps developing towards something intricate and specific and away from the generic feel of the premier. The second episode did that nicely.

I kinda feel like I’d rather have A Song of Ice and Fire MMO first in the same way I’d rather have an MMO version of The Expanse than an MMO version of Firefly. The Expanse really hones in on locations as almost their own characters whereas there’s nothing in Firefly that feels that way. I’d almost rather have a character driven single player game of Firefly that was heavy on silly dialog like the new Guardians of the Galaxy game than an MMO.

I will say that some of the names of characters in WoT made me laugh with how stereotypical they are of like late 80’s early 90’s fantasy.

Absolutely time. It’s been years for fans of the book series that they’ve been salivating at a good MMORPG and the world is so vast and easy to build upon that it would make a great world to explore.

Me and my wife, who met because of the series, grew up on it, read the books over and over and even have our wedding rings set from the books, would absolutely drop everything to join the game.

Now, the longevity of said game would be to be determined but you could easily have so many different PvE and PvE scenarios. I don’t think a PvPvE scenario would work here unless you decide to put it in an Age where the countries were at war with each other, similar to when Artur Hawking was going crazy with uniting, or when Avendesora was burned down and the Aiel came over the Wall, but there is so much lore, so much potential world building, and you wouldn’t be able to go wrong in any Age you go for.

But, and I say this with respect, it would take a ‘long’ time to build the world properly. You also need to figure out what you want to do with the Seanchan, which will be an important influence if you play during the Third Age like the show/books is in. That could be an expansion, for sure, but I can see a lot that can be done here.

Let me and my wife be the Aes Sedai/Warder combo we’ve been dying to do! Furthermore, it could actually be an alternative to ‘cartoon’ based MMOs that some people just don’t like aesthetic. This would be more of a realistic feel (in my view) where you can really show a world of beauty but a world where there is darkness all over.

The possibilities for the series are absolute endless and could allow people to enter the series through a third medium that can be very good at storytelling: Gaming.

The books are great, although I stopped reading them after five or six volumes. Took a break and the world is so complex that I had a hard time getting back into it. But I would love to see an MMO in this world or a Skyrim style RPG.

Long time ago there were plans of making a mmorpg based on WoT, by some obscure developer called “Red Eagle Games” and EA was supposed to publish it. It went into a development hell and we never heard anything about it afterwards

Imagine that grind…

You’d have Deeds like LotRO, gotta max out that braid pulling, and the folding of the arms under the breasts.

Wait, does something happen if you fold your arms OVER the breasts? 😱

I really didn’t like the books. I did play a MUD based on WoT because I had friends who liked it, but I didn’t even really enjoy the MUD. I’m more likely to play a Pokemon MMO than WoT.

Never read the books, don’t plan to watch the show. I have no useful opinion on whether it would make a good MMO.

So why do you even comment then? Is it because you somehow believe that it’s important your voice to be heard by everyone no matter what? Just curious…

Why ask a question when you don’t care what the answer is? Do you consider yourself to be so important that you get to arbitrate who is allowed to comment?

Oh, I am certainly curious about what made you inclined to post an absolutely useless comment. Are you somehow one of the most revered and renowned commenters on this website? If yes, that would explained it to an extent. If not, then why? After all, you’ve said it yourself “I have no useful opinion” that pretty much sums it up.

And no, I don’t get to arbitrate who is allowed to comment nor did I imply that you are not by any means. As I said… Your uselessness got me intrigued.

Fine. Then I have a question for you: Who the hell are you, and who pissed in your cereal this morning?

Ah, there’s a dillema: No adaptation vs a poor adaption.

Or worst yet, a poor adaptation that’s commercially successful ala Michael Bay’s WHEEL OF TIME of hot babes mastering the Force but still needed to be rescued by men, big, beefy, stoic men, that somehow are saluting American flags despite the setting is a different world and time–because reasons–and the cringiest jokes stereotyping racial backgrounds and toilet humor. 😱😱😱
