The Daily Grind: Do you love bumping into your MMO guildies?

One small thing that I very much love about Lord of the Rings Online is that members of my kinship will have their names appear in bright blue letters over their heads in the game world. It never fails to give me a little jolt of happiness when I encounter one of my gang in towns or out in the fields, and even if we’re busy, we usually stop to emote hugs and salutes for a few seconds to acknowledge the occasion.

Am I alone in this? Do you love to bump into your MMO guildies while you’re out and about in your adventures? What do you do when that encounter happens?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

If I’m in a guild I don’t care for, I tend to head the opposite direction. When I fall into these patterns, I know it’s time to leave. >>

If I’m in a guild where I’m comfortable and enjoy the company of others, you bet! Usually I’ll run up to them, exchange a dance or two, chat them up in guild chat, ask if they need help, etc. It’s a nice little warm spot in the game landscape!

I set up some form of /Cheer in every MMO I play.

Yes. When it happens I usually announce in guild chat that “A wild Guidie’s Name appears.” Not that I’ve been in a guild in a while.

I dunno…

…but you seem to bump into all sorts for folks, players and NPC’s alike, when run around in BDO. o.O

The only “guilds” I am in are solo ones, formed for convenient access to blueprints that only a guild can purchase. Or just to block random guild invite spam. The guild leader is me. The guildies are also me. So if I ever bump into a guildie in a game… I think I would have some Very Serious Questions that I’d want answered.

None of my alternate selves are as cool as Spider-Gwen. T~T

So I guess if you run into yourself it’d be rather unsettling?

Only in planned events, anything that derails my solo play longer than 5 minutes really gets grating considering I can just BS in Guild Chat.

Hah, yes, it’s pretty dorky. I turned off all the PC nameplates in FFXIV, mostly for sanity in towns, but also because it makes things a little more immersive for me. But, I left FC and Friend nameplates on so they pop out loudly in like neon orange when I’m scanning over the flood of people in Limsa, for example. And then I go /wave and realize they’re AFK anyway, and then feel silly.

I do this, too! Got into it as a roleplayer so I wouldn’t accidentally meta-game a character’s name, but quickly latched onto it as it was more fun learning to recognize a character by how they look, rather than a name plate over their head.
