The Daily Grind: How much would you pay for a single MMO cosmetic?

A while back, I was fishing around trying to make my husband’s Guild Wars 2 Catalyst look a little more elite in the current meta because let’s be honest, this game is all about the flashy particle effects, and in my estimation he was insufficiently sparkly. I found him a cool hammer in the cash shop, and he looked at the price – something like 500 gems – and said nah. Hard pass. He would rather keep using the noob hammer.

Now, this is a game where mount skins can sometimes run $25, in a genre where people have been known to spend hundreds on in-game shinies. But a couple of bucks is pretty much his limit for pure cosmetics. He just doesn’t get the FOMO.

My limit is higher. I’ve definitely paid for some of the nicer mount skins in Guild Wars 2. But I also won’t go much past $20. Honestly, even that is ridiculous, but it’s easier to justify when they’re account-wide and there’s no sub.

How much would you pay for a single MMO cosmetic? What’s the absolute most you’d shell out? Where’s your limit?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
