WRUP: Behind the magic, the header is a picture of cheese edition

I ride this on the stage.

So recently I got a letter from a reader, folks – I know, I know, hold your applause until the end. I said hold your applause. Stop applauding! When the host says to hold your applause you stop! What, were you raised in a barn?

Ahem. Recently I got a letter from a reader asking some questions about What Are You Playing. Let me just put on my glasses and read that here. Ahem…

Dear Massively Overpowered. I like you very much and think you are all very good writers who write good articles. Thank you for that. However, I do not understand your weekly What Are You Playing feature. It seems like the header images don’t correspond to the text of the opening in any meaningful fashion whatsoever, and the opening is frequently nonsensical and full of abstract imagery to begin with. The whole thing feels completely detached and follows no logical sequence of events in any fashion. Please replace the entire thing with a more sober and sedate opening. Yours sincerely, Brigadier General Herman Q. Thistlebottom (Mrs.)

What a great letter, right, folks? Now you can applaud. Let’s keep this going.

Bonus question: What’s your favorite kind of cheese?

Andrew Ross (@dengarsw): In addition to my usual exercise games, I’m hoping to get in some good time with Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak.

Oh god, this is a tough one. If I just stick to a cheese I’m going to eat without fancying it up, I’m going with bread cheese (leipäjuusto). If you’ve never had it, give it a try. It’s kind of like eating a crustless, sauceless, cold cheese pizza.

Brianna Royce (@nbrianna, blog): My weekend is kinda packed, but I’m hoping to get into City of Heroes Sunday. I’ve been toying with it, and then this week they dropped a beta patch with a new bard powerset for controllers, and I wanna go check it out.

Oh man this is hard… if I could have just one cheese for life, it’d probably be a nice cheddar. Goes on anything. Sorry it’s boring, but I don’t like the super bitter cheeses. I probably eat more cream cheese than anything, though. There’s a farm we go to around here that sells a lovely goat-milk cream cheese that I love (is there a name for this?), but it’s been a while since we had any!

Chris Neal (@wolfyseyes, blog): I am probably going to stay offline for the most part this weekend as I plot things for my tabletop game session or otherwise play something more relaxed and single-player. Just not sure what that will be quite yet.

One of my favorite cheeses is kefalotyri, which is basically like Greek parmesan but with a much sharper flavor. I also love a good gruyere and can never deny an extra sharp aged cheddar, one of my favorite brands of which is Cathedral City – a cheese I only know about thanks to my Welsh husband.

Eliot Lefebvre (@Eliot_Lefebvre, blog): I’ve got a game to review (with more lead time than usual, actually) and my usual Final Fantasy XIV antics, so that’ll probably fill me up this weekend. I did get a couple of games on the Steam Summer Sale, though, so maybe I’ll fire one or two of those up too.

Brie is my favorite. Really. It always brings me to pleasant childhood memories. Of course, I also just love most cheeses in general, with the exception of ricotta.

Sam Kash (@thesamkash): I finally pulled the trigger and bought The Elder Scrolls Online during the Steam sale. So I’m tepidly beginning my journey there. I did the small tutorial mission and now I’m in the big room of portals. I want to get to some PvP action and it isn’t clear which portal heads me in the correct direction. It also isn’t clear if I go through one am I going to be stuck there until I complete that bit or can I turn around and portal right back. So a bit of offline research is in order before I proceed.

Bonus: I love goat cheese. It’s so dang good. Although I am likely about 50% queso too so it’s a toss up.

Patron Pierre: Sorry for the long absence in this column but work has been extremely busy those days. In terms of MMOs, I’m back in Final Fantasy XIV for now, playing very casually as my main gaming objective is to test multiple not-MMO games available on the Xbox GamePass, leaving me with little time to dedicate to MMOs. I’ve been subscribed to XGP for more than a year now, but just like a gym subscription, I’m paying without really using the service offered. So I decided recently that it will be a good opportunity to test some games I never had the opportunity to play before but heard good word-of-mouth about. I’ve been playing two excellent games recently: Lost in Random (very nice story, universe and characters and an original combat system, not perfect but it does the job) and What Remains of Edith Finch (not really a game, more of an interactive experiment, but very well done and written).

Bonus question: Here in France, we have a lot of excellent cheese, and my favorites, I must admit with a little shame, are the most flavoured ones (i.e., the smelly ones, preferably very smelly). My preference goes to Munster cheese, made in the eastern part of France. I think you can find some in the US, but it will not be a “real” french Munster cheese; you have to taste it here if you want the real feels.

And you MOP readers, what are you playing during this weekend?”
