The Daily Grind: Is there an MMO system you just do not understand no matter how hard you try?

Today’s Daily Grind is inspired by a blog from friend of the site Ocho over at Casual Aggro in which he chronicles his attempts to relearn Lord of the Rings Online’s new legendary item system. Frankly, Ocho is a smart guy, and I’m with him on this: Even though I can objectively see that LOTRO’s new LI system is better than the old one, it’s still a quagmire of little bits and pieces. I don’t find it easy either.

That got me thinking about other MMO systems I’ve found difficult to wrap my head around. I mean, I run extremely complicated tools and spreadsheets to master my crafting skills in SWG Legends, for example, but there are whole crafts I just do not get. Ship construction in particular has always eluded me.

I do wonder how much of this is one of those things where it’s down to how much you care. I cared a whole lot about being the best chef, so I learned the heck out of those systems. I don’t really care about building ships or having a raid-quality LI, so my motivation for learning is on the low side, especially when there are so many other more fun things I could be doing with my time in those games.

Is there an MMO system you just do not understand no matter how hard you try?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
