Warframe looks back at 2022 through the lens of a bowl of sourdough bread starter named Igor

We appreciate that this Warframe story’s headline might sound unhinged, but there is a very good reason that the game’s creative director framed the multiplayer shooter’s 2022 updates around a two year-old bowl of sourdough starter. It’s because that bowl of dough, affectionately named Igor, was meant to welcome new employees with freshly made bread. But life as Digital Extremes knew it had to change.

“For two years it sat in a safely chilled container as we all adapted to change – remote working, safety precautions, managing childcare, illness, and more. And as fall turned our leaves to reds and golds, Igor was woken up again when some members of the DE team were ready to go back to the office.

“And we’re so happy he – and the team – are working the way they want. Be it remote, hybrid, or back in the office full time, the end of 2022 is looking very different than the years before it. We’ve had to adapt to so much. But throughout all of it, the community was there to give meaning to our work on Warframe. And as small as it may seem, being able to end the year ripping up a loaf of fresh bread in the office, knowing that Igor is back, was one of the best feelings. Even through enormous change, you can still feel like yourself.”

The post closes with a recounting of the updates made over the course of the past year and looks forward to 2023’s future plans including the Duviri Paradox update and the game’s 10th anniversary, then wishes its playerbase a happy holiday celebration. Perhaps with some freshly baked bread.
