MassivelyOP’s Weirdest MMO Stories of 2022: LOTRO’s new mascot

Today we’re concluding our traditional countdown of MassivelyOP’s weirdest MMORPG stories of the year!

Coming in at #1 on our list is…

LOTRO’S PET ROCK

With the release of Before the Shadow, Lord of the Rings Online’s Standing Stone Games made an oopsie: Somebody accidentally plopped a giant boulder in the middle of the road in Bree-land and shipped the patch like that. Players immediately noticed as the rock actually impeded some fairly critical travel routes.

But something happened that the Rock did not intend. It was picked up by the most unlikely creatures imaginable: the LOTRO playerbase.

They took the rock and adopted the hell out of it. As MOP’s Justin chronicled, players nicknamed it Dwayne Johnson, visited it on pilgrimage, performed concerts atop it, memed it, held parties beside it, and petitioned SSG not to remove it.

Your experience may change during online play, indeed.

That’s a wrap on our weirdest stories – don’t forget to check out our annual MMORPG awards and our Golden Yachties!
