MultiVersus takes a $100M bite out of WB Games’ profits as the fighter outlines Season 4

You would be forgiven for believing that platform fighter MultiVersus was doing well enough from the outside looking in, as the game continued to release new seasons and new fighters. However, it would appear that things are not so great from a financial standpoint, as both the fighter and the multiplayer sports title Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions both resulted in a $100M loss for WB Games.

Warner Bros CEO David Zaslav and CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels both admitted that the titles and its games division are “substantially underperforming [their] potential right now” in the company’s latest investor call. This fiscal hit is combined with the $200M loss that was laid on the shoulders of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and ultimately play a “key factor in this year’s studio profit decline” according to Wiedenfels, while WB Games has lost 31% of its revenue overall in the third quarter.

Still MultiVersus is pushing forward, revealing in a new dev blog that Season 4 will introduce a new way for players to unlock fighters. This Fighter Road feature is effectively a reward track that unlocks tiers of grouped fighters one at a time as players earn Fighter Road XP, which can be earned from matches and special events or purchased directly. Developer Player First says this new feature should make unlocking characters easier to follow.

The new season will also introduce a lab feature that lets players try out “the bulk of the roster” beforehand, while fighter currency will be discontinued in the new season; characters can also still be purchased directly with remaining fighter currency or cash shop currency.
