Riot Games, still closed in LA thanks to the wildfires, opens aid fundraisers in Valorant and League of Legends

Last week, we covered the devastation happening in Southern California, where half a dozen wildfires were ripping through Los Angeles neighborhoods from working class areas to Malibu. If the story has fallen off your radar, just know that the fires are actually not under control yet; as winds finally calmed down, the Palisades fire is less than a third contained, while the Eaton fire is finally over half contained.

The news became relevant to the gaming industry almost immediately, as multiple game studios and their local workers were affected, including Riot Games, which shut down its offices last week. Those offices are still closed, according to a new memo from Riot that released last night, but the game company says it has not been idle.

“This crisis has deeply affected our teams, with some Rioters losing their homes and many others still evacuated. In moments like this, our priority is their health and safety. We’ve taken steps to support Rioters navigating this difficult time by providing temporary housing, emergency stipends, and access to advisory services. We’re committed to evolving this support as their needs become clearer. We also want to thank players for their patience with us during this time. Our Los Angeles headquarters is only a few miles from the Palisades Fire and has remained closed since the fires began, but Riot’s hybrid in-person/remote setup has allowed the LA-based Rioters who are able to work to keep our games and esports running smoothly.”

The company discusses its assistance to the community this far; it’s apparently made multiple charitable donations to local aid and service organizations as well as provided a generator to a fire station and meals through World Central Kitchen. It’s also running two promos in Valorant and League of Legends to benefit the Riot Games Social Impact Fund.
