The Daily Grind: Should roads in MMORPGs actually matter?

Readers might remember that when we awarded the rogue server of the year to Star Wars Galaxies Legends back in December, we specifically noted that it was the player-run game’s new road system that sealed the deal. Player cities can now lay an intricate set of roads that make the cities feel, well, more like cities and less like random clusters of buildings in the wilderness. Clever mayors can even build networks of roads up in the sky and bypass annoying natural formations. I so wish the original game had these!

So that got me thinking about other MMOs with roads – but I’m having a hard time remembering whether they actually matter. Project Gorgon popped to mind, but Google tells me I’m wrong in thinking the roads speed players up. And Albion Online got so many requests to make its roads matter for speeding up travel that it finally gave in and added some claimable buffs to Roads of Avalon.

That can’t be it, right? Doesn’t this seem like something that should be a thing, especially in sprawling open-world games that don’t want to add fast-travel? Tell me about some other MMOs that have cool road and street mechanics. Do any other MMOs have useful roads that matter – or even just look cool? And should roads in MMORPGs actually matter?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
