There are a lot of zones in World of Warcraft that deserve way more credit than they ever got. This probably doesn’t really matter all that much at this point; it’s not as if anyone is going to go back and really notice how pretty Azshara was before it got hastily retrofitted with Goblin stuff back in Cataclysm. But it was a gorgeous zone. Same with a lot of parts of that game. You can talk about chunky assets or low-poly portions, but the net result was that places like Silverpine Forest and the Swamp of Sorrows looked really good even at launch.

When we talk about maps in any game, we tend to focus on the functional side of them, things like quests and quest flow, how hard the enemies are, and so forth. But I say there are a lot of underappreciated areas that are just nice to look at, parts of any game that are visually pleasing first and foremost. So what’s an underappreciated MMO zone in your opinion? What’s a nice-looking part of the game that you enjoy hanging around in?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
