The Daily Grind: Would a Star Wars The Old Republic progression server work?

Shoot to wound!

A few years ago, it seemed like progression servers were all the rage in MMOs. And why not? They’re a great way to revisit content, to level alongside a community, and to freshen up stale settings. MMORPGs are in a unique position to be able to offer this, and some studios have gladly done so.

However, the one title that I keep wishing would consider a progression server never has. Star Wars: The Old Republic consolidated old realms and even rolled out a new one, but it’s never done “the progression thing.” Yet with all of its many years of content, patches, and expansions, it totally could, and I think it might even be pretty popular as a way to draw players back into the game.

Do you agree or disagree? Could a SWTOR progression server work in 2025? Should Broadsword consider doing this or focus its efforts elsewhere?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
