The Daily Grind: Are virtual reality MMOs ever coming back?

Back in February, we covered the unfortunate news that OrbusVR, one of the very first serious MMORPGs in the VR space, was throwing in the towel and sunsetting in April. As studio Ad Alternum explained, it was no longer financially viable to even keep the game online, never mind pay salaries, with player counts as low as they were. And the producer told fans offering to cut them checks to invest their time and money into other VR MMOs instead.

It’s a kind thought, but… we don’t really have a lot of other VR MMOs. Zenith basically imploded. CCP Games can’t make them stick. I suppose there’s still Ilysia, but I don’t really have much reason to think its fate will be different from Orbus and Zenith’s. VR device sales aren’t really having a moment, either.

VR has never been something that interested me, so maybe I am just missing something here. Are virtual reality MMOs ever coming back? If you have your eye on one, what is it and why?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
