War Thunder’s World War I April Fools’ Day mode is no joke, and yes, it boasts NPC infantry

Everyone’s got that one friend who, when invited to a costume party where most people are ghosts or catgirls, shows up in a custom Darth Maul outfit that costs thousands of dollars, complete with professionally applied makeup and a shaved head. War Thunder is basically that friend on April Fools’ Day. It does not just put in a cute minipet and some fake patch notes; it goes all out and then goes further.

“Welcome to The Great War in War Thunder,” Gaijin says. Yes, it’s introducing a WWI mode to the game.

“The year is 1918. The war between the Entente and Central Powers is raging on in its final year. Soldiers fight on, tanks have made their debut on the battlefield, and planes dogfight in the sky. You have been enlisted to fight for your country. Gear up, new conscript! This event takes you back to the brutal battlefields of the Western Front in Flanders during the First World War. Command the first tanks to have ever gone into combat and dogfight in the skies with aircraft, or immerse yourself by piloting a Zeppelin airship, capable of bombing enemy targets. An event like this wouldn’t be complete without AI infantry, who roam around the trenches and in no man’s land at the front line.”

The event runs from today through April 7th, though some of the vehicles will be playable after the event is over too. Also… it kinda seems like the infantry content isn’t a joke anymore either, although players are not the infantry themselves. We live in interesting times!
