Survival Kids is a new Switch 2 survivalbox with callbacks to a 1999 Game Boy Color title

Last week’s Nintendo Direct has another offering that might appeal to some MMO players, especially MMO players with littles: Konami and Unity are apparently launching a new “cozy co-op adventure” on the Switch 2 when it arrives in June. It’s called Survival Kids, and it’s actually not fully brand-new. Apparently, there was a game called Survival Kids on the Game Boy Color way back in 1999, which actually makes sense since that was a big era for sandboxy MMOs like Ultima Online and Asheron’s Call. The new game is a reimagining of the old.

“[The 1999 game] Survival Kids was ahead of its time, blending open-ended survival mechanics with exploration, crafting, and storytelling – long before the genre became mainstream,” the press release says. “Now, this modern reinterpretation expands on the original’s spirit of adventure, introducing fresh co-op gameplay elements to offer new ways to survive, explore, and adapt.” Here’s the modern pitch:

“Players take on the role of four curious kids who, after discovering a tattered map, set sail on a fateful journey – only to be swept into a mysterious hidden world. Stranded across a chain of uncharted islands resting on the backs of Whurtles (whale-turtle creatures), they must rely on teamwork to explore, gather resources, and craft essential tools. With support for both local and online co-op, up to four players can chop, cook, fish, and solve environmental puzzles. All while facing the unpredictable dangers of their surroundings.”

It does look like it won’t be cheap, running $49.99, and it will indeed be a Switch 2-only product, so budget accordingly. Launch is June 5th.
