Way back when I first dipped into MMOs with Anarchy Online, I remember being vastly underwhelmed by the lackluster sound design of that game’s combat. There’s nothing that leeches the fun out of a fight like audio that sounds like someone is going to town on a bad guy with a wet noodle or a wiffle bat.
Not all MMO sound design is the same, and some have more — how shall I put this? — “punchier” combat audio than others. You get more of an immersive and vicarious experience when it does sound like you’re doing some serious damage.
So which MMOs have the best combat sound design? Which were or are a delight to listen to when you’re in the middle of slaughtering a field of hedgehogs or zombies?
