RuneScape Dragonwilds sees high Steam numbers as Jagex tells its devs to touch grass

The release week for RuneScape: Dragonwilds, the survival sandbox from Jagex that surprise launched into early access, has been an understandably busy one as multitudes of gamers arrive to try out the early access title and see just what’s happening in this new-look slice of Gielinor.

As of right now, Dragonwilds has hit the number three spot in Steam’s sales charts, climbing overhead such titles as the action RPG Lords of the Fallen and its 2.0 update and the resurgent Baldur’s Gate 3 and Last Epoch. Meanwhile concurrency numbers on the platform have stayed near a steady 50K mark over the past several days, with over 25K playing the title at the time of this writing.

Overall player sentiment appears to be generally sunny: Critical reviews published thus far read fairly positive or middling, while Steam reviews are at “mostly positive.” Some laud the simplicity as an asset, talk up how it brings back classic RS memories, or mark its potential, while others complain about insurmountable shortcomings like aggressive foes and overbearing survival needs.

Jagex has so far put out a hotfix to address a couple of quest bugs but mostly has told the devs of the survivalbox to go outside and touch grass. Quite literally. “We’ve been fully accelerating towards this release (but not crunching because… like… no.) but now we need the team to touch grass IRL rather than in game so we can get some rest and get back at it next week,” the latest dev blog writes.

With that said, the devs are pulling together player feedback and planning to present next steps to players. Part of that data collection is coming by way of a feedback survey that was presented in Discord. Interested fans are asked to put in their input before Wednesday, April 30th, at 3:00 a.m. EDT.
