The Daily Grind: Do you research your MMO character builds or wing it?

I am probably not what you would call a min/maxer, so I never usually feel undue pressure to seek out the absolute best and optimal build for my MMO characters. However, if a game’s character system is complex — Path of Exile and Dungeons and Dragons Online, I’m looking at you — I might seek out some trustworthy builds for ease of mind.

For the most part, though, I enjoy winging my builds and picking whatever is most interesting and attractive to me. I like molding a character build to my playstyle, if at all possible. Min/maxing can take a backseat to my immersion and personal engagement.

How do you approach character builds in MMOs? Do you find great fun in researching them and fine-tuning their potential, do you simply wing it, or is there an interesting middle ground you’ve found?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
