The Daily Grind: Would you play a Marvel Heroes revival without the Marvel IP?

Could mean anything.

Earlier this month, we saw the return of Defiance after Gamigo licensed Fawkes to run a revived version of it. Awesome, frankly. More of this please!

And as for more of this, I can’t help but remember that Gamigo still owns the charred remains of Marvel Heroes – because Trion owned the charred remains of Marvel Heroes. In fact, back in 2019, Gamigo confirmed that purchase and said it was “evaluating” the assets from the Gazillion collapse, but we haven’t really heard much since, and of course, Gamigo has shrunk down to five games in the meantime, so we don’t see Gamigo ever doing much with the game.

And surely, it wouldn’t be revived as Marvel Heroes itself, as the IP is simply too costly. But the underlying game was solid – so solid that people have been working hard on what is probably going to wind up being a popular rogue server when it’s done cooking. Might it be worth it to an indie studio like Fawkes to revive it formally with a fresh new IP? And more importantly, would you be interested? Would you play a Marvel Heroes revival without the Marvel IP?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
