As the medieval survival sandbox Bellwright celebrates its first year of early access, studio Donkey Crew is taking a well-deserved pause to reflect upon the overall vision of this multiplayer title.
“It was important that we put the player in charge,” one developer explained, going on to say that it’s not just the outcome that the user can claim but the choice of path leading to that outcome. The team also said that it wasn’t trying for historical accuracy with Bellwright but rather a sense of immersion into the feel of a 13th century vibe and a “living world.”
“Bellwright really is a kid’s fantasy of a medieval world,” a dev said. “We intentioned overly gory or brutal scenes because we wanted to touch upon intellectual medieval fantasy.”
As readers will recall, Bellwright is Donkey Crew’s second survivalbox; its first, the MMO Last Oasis, has now entered its fourth year of early access with only modest movement and only recently.
