Pax Dei studio lays off nearly 30% of its team but says the MMORPG is still on track

Well, bad news for Pax Dei fans: Studio Mainframe Industries announced this morning that it’s restructuring – which means the layoff of nearly a third of its workers, as the team shrinks from roughly 60 people to just 43.

“Though incredibly painful, this is necessary to secure the future of our studio and ensure the continued development of Pax Dei,” the studio writes (it is literally signed “The Mainframe Team,” not any specific executive).

“Despite this reorganization, our mission remains unchanged. The development of Pax Dei is continuing, and our commitment to its vision is stronger than ever. In fact, we owe it to everyone, especially those who are leaving, to see this through. We also want to be transparent: with a smaller team, progress will take more time. Building an MMO with a team of 60 was already a significant challenge – doing so with fewer people will require even more resilience, passion, and focus.”

The remaining team also says Verse #3 is “well underway” and on track for spring though it will “require a few more weeks to be released.” The studio is also still planning a full launch for later this year.

Pax Dei rolled into early access last June; we’ve previewed it several times now, finding it to be exactly what it says on the tin: a sandboxy MMORPG with a heavy emphasis on multiplayer collaborative building content and fairly grindy crafting, though it is definitely an MMORPG and not just an upjumped survivalbox.
