Evidently missions are going to be the main feature in Star Citizen soon, as the sandbox’s latest video digest is all about the assortment of new missions coming in alpha 4.1.1, which are categorized among a few different types but all involve ship-to-ship PvE combat.

These new missions include destroying a stolen Polaris before it can reach the Pyro system, 12 different patrol contracts split between lawful and criminal factions that draw from four different events as players move from point to point, challenging new combat gauntlet missions, and 12 ambush contracts again split between lawful and criminal groups where players hide until a target arrives to them.

On top of some random objectives in certain mission types, all missions have a chance to spawn in an ace pilot for players to take down. Those who are successful will be able to EVA and loot the pilot’s corpse for a new scrip currency that can be brought to Wikelo for collector ships, while other combat missions will reward scrip. Pieces of this currency will also be hiding around the Invictus event floor.

Speaking of Invictus, the video highlights that as well, pointing out some of the new ways the event floor will be set up to make it easier to rent vehicles and see showcases of ships and ship components as well as guiding players to the parked Idris that can be explored during the event.

These new missions hopefully push against the perception of players that Star Citizen is “FPS Citizen” as they’ve come to refer to it. The peek at what’s arriving awaits below.

Longtime MMORPG gamers will know that Star Citizen was originally Kickstarted for over $2M back in 2012 with a planned launch for 2014. As of 2025, it still lingers in an incomplete but playable alpha, having raised over $800M from gamers over years of continuing crowdfunding and sales of in-game ships and other assets. It is currently the highest-crowdfunded video game ever and has endured both indefatigable loyalty from advocates and immense skepticism from critics. A co-developed single-player title, Squadron 42, has also been repeatedly delayed.
