Nintendo denies that Switch 2’s Mario Kart World uses generative AI

There’s no doubt that one of the hot button topics in the video games industry these days is the use — or the prohibition — of artificial intelligence in place of human designers and artists. Studios trying to sneak some generative AI into their works risk a huge blowback because of it, which is presumably why Nintendo was quick to respond to accusations that the upcoming Mario Kart World employs such tech in its levels.

The concern arose following a recent video of the multiplayer kart racer showing what looked to be suspicious graphics with weird proportions on billboards. Nintendo categorically denied that anything was amiss, saying, “AI-generated images were not used in the development of Mario Kart World.” It could be that these billboards are using placeholder art, as some speculate.

Mario Kart World is a launch title for the Switch 2, which is coming out on June 5th.
