Survival Machine is a co-op game about building a giant rolling fortress and fighting waves of ‘silly zombies’

Maybe you like the idea of playing a survival sandbox that focuses on building and controlling enormous vehicles but aren’t keen on the PvP bent of other such titles. In that case, perhaps you should put Survival Machine, a co-operative survival title from studio Grapes Pickers about building an enormous rolling fortress and fighting off against “silly zombies,” on your radar.

“Welcome to a world teeming with eternally hungry – yet strangely lovable – zombies! A place where every hill hides a new discovery, every step brings a fresh challenge, and your only hope for survival is the Machine – your mighty, mobile fortress and lifeline amid the chaos. Get ready to build, fight, explore, and protect what’s yours – solo or with up to three friends!”

Survival Machine’s gameplay is effectively broken up into two halves: By day, players are encouraged to gather resources, upgrade and customize their rolling fortress, and solve puzzles around the biome. At night, it’s all about making it through the horde of cartoony zombies, utilizing weapons, traps, and apparently dance moves to combat the threat. As the title would suggest, the game is all about the machine – if the fortress breaks down, it’s game over.

Survival Machine has kicked off its early access on Steam as of last week and will set players back $20, though it’s currently on sale at a 20% discount until May 21st. Early access is estimated to take a year, with plans to add a complete journey for the titular machine, new weapons, and new items to craft along the way. As of right now Steam reviews sit at “mostly positive,” with some conflicting reports of difficulty being too hard or too simple for solo players, along with imbalance in co-op, though most seem to enjoy the low-poly aesthetic and fun vibes.
