Wayfinder has not had an easy life. Originally meant as an ongoing multiplayer game, it was abruptly ditched by its publisher, Digital Extremes, and was forced to go independent. Studio Airship Syndicate launched on PC and PS5 last fall, having scaled back the game’s ambitions with a new single-player-with-optional-multiplayer format; back in January, the team launched it on Xbox and added a new hardcore mode too. So what has happened to the game since then?
Well, nothing. But the explanation for why is pretty easily found in a discussion on Steam in which a purchaser is salty about the lack of updates. The top response from one of the developers states outright that continued support of the game was contingent on the game hitting the sales targets necessary to fund ongoing development – something Airship has repeated multiple times over the last couple of years.
So did it hit those targets? Apparently not, else it would be receiving ongoing development. However, it is also fully playable and persistent for players who have bought it, meaning that it exists as a finished and enjoyable game. That may not be the answer that fans who hoped for more from the title would like to hear, but it is the answer that we have. And it’s an honest one.
